Using one canister filter for 2 tanks.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So ive got 2 tanks that will be on the same stand one on top and one on bottom.

One of the tanks has a hole in it, which gave me the idea. "could i just use that hole as an overflow and have both tanks running on the same filter?"

So what do you guys rekon about this?

tank 1 is 615lx510hx510w

tank 2 is 900lx450hx430w

The filter i was thinking of using is a Aqua one 1000lph canister filter, this filter has 3 baskets in which i wish to put coarse spounge, dacron and matrix in that order.

The fish that will be in these tanks are

Tank 1- Grow out tank for baby BN

Tank 2- Breeding tank with 2 pairs pepps and 1 trio of OS

(i could swap these around if you think? they are roughly the same literage)

So yeah, you reakon the filter could handle it?, there will proly be around 50-100 babies in tank 1 just to give you an idea of the waste load.

Cheers

Alex

So what you're planning is:

Top tank overflows into bottom tank, canister filter intake takes from bottom tank, canister filter outtake puts water back in top tank.

Or something else?

I think the set up would work, but you'd need a better filter probably. That filter only turns over the entire water volume 3 times an hour, and with 100 babies + 7 adults worth of waste I don't think it will do the job.

yep your spot on with the setup plan.

ok fair enough, i might give it a miss as buying a better canister filter would defeat the aim of the project

Without a doubt the idea works

Though that filter isnt even close to what you want

I used this idea on my plant tanks at the shop though I didnt run many fish in there at all

I would definalty add some sponges to the tanks especially with the babies as they will need the more filtration

I would try for at least a 2000LPH filter to 2500LPH

yeah i was thinking maybe have the canister set up aswell as a 2000lph internal power head

But then i guess that defeats the purpose of having the canister filter on both tanks :/ hmmmm
