Been playing round with google sketch up, and got a build to do for a friend and one for me as well. this is what i have come up with. both have been drawn to timber sizing available from bunnings, and to the requirements of the tanks. The hood is to suit a 6x2 and the stand is to suit a 4x2.

I am planning on fitting doors to the stand, just haven't drawn them on.

140x19 sides from memory, 2x290x19 + a 42x19 for the top. its gonna be heavy but its solid and its gonna be alot more solid than the crappy shop bought ones and less than half the price!

I always paint the inside of the hoods with a white high gloss paint, if your using a cheapo flouro and doesnt have the reflector it helps with the reflection of the light into the tank.

will be pricing up the 6ft stand with F17 rated kiln dried hardwood legs and runners under the ply. also looking at doing it with glass framed doors. Is it a 6x2 stand that your looking at? Just need to get the size of the tank as all stands and hoods that I do will be built to suit the individual tank and not just a generic size. If you want it made with extra spacing just incase you replace the tank and there is sizing differences let me know its no extra in the cost. Also you can define what height you would like the tank to sit. I am planning to do the leg height at 700mm.

I am choosing to go for the dressed pine instead of fingerjoint and kd hardwood for legs as it has a better finish as the mgp10 pine has the reeded finish and i dont feel like sanding that off. Once again I dont think I am going to be able to obtain the timbers at the quality that i want from the seconds places. As I am using the dearer timbers the price is obviously going to be higher but I am planning on them being display quality and able to be stained and lacquered. I will be looking at doing this in the future as funds permit me to obtain more tools. I have also found a solid mounlding that will allow me to do a lower profile colonial hood which will look absolutely fantastic. The cost of this timber is quite high bit the sell cost will still be fairly reasonable. for a 4x2 colonial I am invisioning bout the $160 mark...
