Suggestions for community tank (american)

Recommended Posts

I'm doing some research on behalf of a mate. He has a 4ft tank with a pair firemouths, and just wondering what other fish would be compatable to create a nice community tank. He's not really bothered with whether the firemouths breed (they spawned once before) but would like to have a nice happy tank.

Only other fish in the tank at the moment are a couple bristlenose and two mystis catfish.

mate maybe a salvini would be ok, i have kept both together without any problems. salvini only grow to about 15cm give or take and they have unreal colours.

15cm?

Here is a post Japes put up on MFK

6.8 inches = 17.3cm

This is just a female!

They grow quite large in good conditions!

IronMonkey had a male that he purchased as a pair off another member here, BooY. I still estimate the male to be at least 9" TL, which is about 22-23cm. They would cream Firemouth in a 4' setup, they're a very temperamental fish with teeth to follow through.

I'd suggest looking at other smaller Centrals such as Archocentrus species. Few common names to get you started are T-Bar Cichlid, Rainbow Cichlid, Blue Eye Cichlid.
