Tropical Freshwater Mussel

Natural filtration

I have had them in a few tanks over the years

Mainly in plant tanks at the shop though

They help keep the water clearer

I remember reading a study where they found them in huge numbers in a creek and the water was always perfect where as water in the surrounding areas had problems

Gidday mate we have them wild down here they grow to a great size I have read that a big one will filter up to 300 litres of water in a 24 hour period you have to keep your eye on them in your tank as you wouldnt want one to die in there and not know about it they dont float

cheers hilly

I've read somewhere something about how when they spawn they release heaps n heaps of eggs/babies (?) that need to cling to a native fish to grow etc. In the wild this isn't a problem cos they get dispersed everywhere but in a tank theyre confined and can all attach themselves to one or a few fish overwhelming the fish. I think theyre like a parasite (blood sucker).

Maybe someone can correct me / fill in the gaps!
