Cleaning secondhand canister filter

Recommended Posts

I have just bought a secondhand canister filter and want to give it a complete clean before using. I've thrown away the filter media to buy new as it was pretty rank.

What should I use to clean the canister to ensure it doesn't contain any nasties?

It's old fashioned, but I use Condy's Crystals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_permanganate)

It'll destroy any nasties and can be rinsed clean with no residue and no after effects. Just use some rubber gloves. It'll even get rid of any leftover of trumpet snails.

Don't go leaving it in there overnight or anything, just use it for a quick scrub.

I prefer that to bleach.

Ive just recently bought sum secondhand stuff, i use boiling hot water rather than anything chemical to avoid any mistakes happening of not removing all the chlorine.

Interesting thing the candys crystals may have to have a nose gtr.
