Stig
I've visited the Redlands Pet Centre for the first time this morning and I'm still stunned. The guy that runs it 'Russ', is a true gentleman. Very down to earth and willing to offer advice and share knowledge like no other. May I also mention that he gives a very very good discount to QLDAF members. Well, he gave me 30% of when I got some peacocks... You can buy food, chemicals etc in bulk from him... and the discounte price he'll give you are unbeleiveable. Even cheaper that online stores. orry I just had to share this with everyone. CHEERS

Trusty
Redlands Pet Centre is my lfs. It is in Capalaba though. Not Redland Bay. It is in a shopping centre called Capalaba Park Shopping Centre. It is not your typical shopping centre store and is much larger than normal. Great fish display and as others have mentioned great prices. I don't buy from anyone else. Just make sure you ask for Russ and tell him you are from QLDAF. Triston
malawimates
Wow, at least someone is enjoying the store. The times we have been in there they have been extremely rude and ignorant so we've never bothered going back. PLUS they feed all the cichlids white crane. Mind you they will tell you it's colour enhancing food that they feed them and if you push them for the exact product they finally concede and admit it's white crane. bryanm62
I've been in there several times and always found them to be very helpful and polite. Never had a problem.

Moses
What is white crane? Its a colour enhancing food. Looked down upon because it makes fish colour up as males regardless of sex. Also known to make fish sterile. Not suitable for breeders obviously. Display fish it works a treat. Plenty of literature on the web as well as arguments. Better off using spirulina products IMO. dude_753
White Crane is a high protein fish food with PSB to enhance high survival rate fast growth and colours. It just speeds everything up. PSB: Highly nutritious Photosynthetic Bacteria is added to brighten up the body color Nick
briztoon
Only use NLS pellets and Hikari frozen foods.
Stig
Well, when I was there they were feeding NLS ... did not see any white crane. The fish didn't look like they were white crane'd. And I usually can spot this as I have experimented with my display fish years ago. The guy seems to experiment with different colour gravel with different fish to best bring out their colour. gtr73
I will admit, a few years ago I used white crane for my display tank of peacocks. I didn't like it. As people have said, every fish colours up but it somehow looked unnatural to me. I also found them to become much more aggressive. But the worst thing is as soon as you stop feeding them white crane or even if you reduce to 2-3 times a week, they immediately loose colouration and go a horrible brown/grey. Most looked fairly unhappy. I found i had to feed them every single day to maintain the vibrant colours and nothing else. Almost a trap really. After finding out more about it, I stopped using white crane but was left with a tank full of drab and unhappy fish. So I've resolved to never ever use it again, don't care what people say. Bottom line is it doesn't give a true representation of your fish and how they should be healthy. Even sick fish will colour up with it! I've found a diet of NLS and veggie flake plus ideal water conditions and maintenance produces the same vibrant colours. And I have happy healthy fish. Just my experience with it anyway. cichlidmad
Ok as you people who say russell uses white crane you are barking up the wrong tree he does not use it as i am good friends with him i now what he uses and it is not white crane. So please do not spread lies. He doesn't use a deadicated colour enhancer he uses a mixture of several foods if you don't believe me he is a nice well mannered guy and will tell you exxactally what he uses If you feel this way it is your lose as he does excelent prices on all products all long as you say your from here and you must speak to himself Russell
bryanm62
I find it impossible to believe firstly a lfs owner would admit to a customer they use white crane and secondly they would even use it. They have been in business long enough now that word would have gotten around if they were using it. There would be no surer way to kill off repeat sales than to use white crane. Any lfs owner would know this.
Trusty
Hi Guys As this appears to be a bit of a Hot Topic, I phoned Russ at Redlands Pet Centre to ask him what he feeds his Africans. This is the list which he emailed me and will quite happily tell anyone. Spectrum Thera A Spectrum Cichlid OSI Spirulina Pellet of Flake Aqua One Vege Wafers (currently under trial) Hikari Algae Pellets Aqua One Colour Enhancer Pellet (currently trially and was recommended to him by a QLDAF member) Aqua One Cichlid Pellets Fish Dinner Marine Green Tetra Color Granules (Color Bits) Aqua Magic (Trial about to end and probably won't continue with it) He added that he often tries certain foods and gets others to also try them, usually at his cost, to get a general opinion before recommending it for sale. I'm sure others on this forum can back this up. I questioned him about White Crane and he said he can't get it because he won't deal with the local distributor of the product and his thoughts on using it were as follows: "I have used it in the past and found that it is great for display fish and in a display tank I would probably use it in small doses if necessary. Depending upon how coloured up we could get the fish with other foods. I am quite often asked for it, in fact sometimes daily. Usually we can steer people in the right direction and on to some other good foods like spirulina which I still believe is by far the best food for Africans especially Peacocks and Zebras. I have no problem with the ADF version of White Crane, not that I can get it or get to use it. I did find it was much better for the health of the fish and there was no hollow guts like fish on Super G or R. We did experiment again with White Crane last September - November as I was told that the ingredients had been modified. The end result was that the fish were bright coloured and females were just as bright as per usual. The hollow guts were returning after week 6 so we ended the experiment there. At the end of the day, I don't believe it really matters if you want to use it or not. We choose not to sell it others do. I still have females colouring up using Spectrum and Aqua One and we all know these products have no hormones in them. So at the end of the day - its your choice. " So there you have it. Hope this clarifies things. And don't forget Russ hasn't been on here bragging or telling everyone this stuff. All the positive feedback has been from happy members of this forum who deal with Russ all the time and get great service and even better prices. malawimates are you sure you are not thinking of the Pet Superstore on Redland Bay Road instead of Redlands Pet Centre in Capalaba Park Shopping Centre. I told Russ and he said he would be very disappointed if his staff had not provided you with good service and in any case please go back and see him next time you are there. Bye for now Triston

Can you please give your thoughts on this matter as I think he will be a valuable asset to all of us. Triston

If it wasn't for Petland Aquarium signing up I wouldn't have done any business with them, but although they're 2 hours away from where I live, I'll still recommend them to people in Brisbane/GC. ronny
From speaking to russ he seems as tho hes the sort of bloke that would be more than happy to sponsor the forum. As for malawimates comment, are you sure you arent talking about pet super store on redland bay rd, as they are arrogant at times especially if they dont see a con job sale in you. Russ' store has always had the most polite staff that have been more than willing to show you the food that they are feeding their fish which has always been spectrum or tetra for the cichlids.. He also gave me a sample of the new aqua one food hes trialling to trial at his cost(about 200g). All in all i reckon that their should be more honest shops like his around. Stig
I also found the staff there to be very polite and professional. Russ seems to have quiet a team there. He also gave me about 200g of the same food to try it out... and at his expence. Now, I only met the bloke that day, so how often does this happen...never. Redlands Pet Centre all the way..... Russ recommended i try the aqua one vege wafers but i really didnt want to pay 16.95 for 200g to try something but russ gave it to me for a rediculous price(sorry but wont say how much) cos he is trialling it himself. And low and behold my bn cant get enough. Good bloke he is.
