Qfas auction this Saturday

Recommended Posts

http://www.qfas.org/

I would like to attend but I have never been to a fish auction in my life.

Should I get there early? How long does it go for? Is there free parking, refreshments, seating, and wc facilities available?

Should I bring an esky or anything in case I buy something?

What goes up for sale first; fish, plants, driftwoods, tanks?

Surely someone on this forum has been to one before?

They have everything from fish to accessories, food, plants, books even. Large variety of fish - Tropicals, Cichlids, Australian Natives, Catfish.

There's no need to register as a buyer, just stick your hand up to bid. They have two auctioneers up on stage, photo projector in between them displaying a photo of the item for sale (usually taken from the Net), and they auction one lot at a time (one lot = one bag of fish). You can't see the stock essentially, unless you're right up in the first row. If there's 2 or 3 lots of the same lot (eg. they auction one bag of 5 juvie Elec Yellows but they have two more bags of five juvies behind them), they will tell the winning bidder there's three bags, do they want all three bags. If not they then offer the other bags to the 2nd and 3rd bidder, then the rest of the audience.

As a seller, you have to bag your fish properly (must be suitable to the size of fish, up to 5 juvies in one bag, 20-30% water, the rest air), don't feed them 24hrs prior, must be properly labled with quantity, sex if possible and species (common name at least) and a reserve price. QFAS takes a cut of the sale (5%?). Those lots not sold are passed in and sometimes, time permitting, they re-auction at end of the night. It's all detailed on the site anyway.

They will have food, usually BBQ sausages on a roll, hot doggies, cans of drink, chocolates.

And the last auction it was quite big so went till all hours, 1.30-2.00am in the morning. However in the past usually goes up till about midnight.

Free parking. I'd bring an esky cause it can go so long and in case you buy something.

Couldn't tell you if they'll have oxygen on hand Benni. Sometimes they do but it costs ya ($1/bag last time I remember), so better to do it before if you're keen, and have access to O2. The organisers are mainly concerned that you've bagged them properly and there isn't heaps of poo floating in the bag.

Fish can be put in starting 3pm. You can get they're later with fish to sell (not sure just how late), but the later you put them in the later they will come up in the night.
