I have a heap of light fittings that i want to use for my tanks, but they dont have the "reflectors" ... They are earthed ... Whats the difference between these and aquarium lights?

More importantly can i use these?

Thanks

Yep, that's what I have too. Once hung from the ceiling on two chains in a living room, a 4ft.

Does the job well because you get double batons so double the light. Just don't leave it on for more than 12 hours a day because you may get algae problems and it'll burn plants that don't need much light such as Java Fern. I have mine on for just an hour in the morning for feeding time, and 4 hours in the evening to enjoy the aquarium in our lounge room.

Can use whatever fluro baton you like or can use the aquarium specific ones, which are at Bunnings.

If you have a few and can wire them each properly with a plug, you'll probably get a few interested forum members wanting one.

I have 2 lots of 3 x 2ft (maybe 2.5ft) that are already wired together with a plug, but no switch.

If anyone is reading this and interested let me know ;) will swap for a single 3ft light of fish (most things african) :)

Thanks for the quick answers :)

You can use roof guttering (upside down) for simple light reflectors and they even have end caps. If you get white colourbond or plastic they wont rust and you wont even need to paint the inside to reflect.

Alternatively you can mount the light battens naked but on their side but have them facing to the back so the base will act as the hood and you wont get blinded.

If you have double battens which are too bright, just take one tube out.
