WhoWeR Posted May 21, 2008 Report Share Posted May 21, 2008 Just wondering if Tetra color Bits would make small peacocks (5-6cm) fully color up? I was in a new pet shop at Rothwell and really liked the look of some of there peacocks but I am wary about the color of them. They were small and some were completely colored up and others not far off it. I didn't notice any females except maybe two but they were showing color coming out. If it's just the tetra color bits, would they have trouble coming off that food? I have heard that some color food are additive to fish and they wont accept other foods. WhoWeR Posted May 21, 2008 Author Report Share Posted May 21, 2008 I asked the girl that was near the tank section what they had been feeding the peacocks and she said they "only feed them tetra color bits." I commented on the high color in them and told it looks like they have been color feed but she didn't comment. Personally I think she just feeds them but had no idea. Maybe these guy were only new in the shop and the previous place craned them?? I didn't think to ask that. Some of the larger peacocks they had didn't have as good color as these little fellas. I plan to feed them on NLS pellets. The last time I had to get food I didn't have much money and brought a generic(shop) brand. You can tell the difference in the fish, they looked so much better on NLS. I was tempted to buy some of them to add to my new display but I was worried if they have been craned that I would be buying more trouble than good. Bring them home only to have them not eat and lose all the nice colors and look like crap and die. That's the best part of peacocks is the fantastic colors you can get. Redlands Pet Centre Posted May 21, 2008 Report Share Posted May 21, 2008 I probably should be leaving this one alone and I don't want to sound like I am sticking up for another shop, in fact I don't know of this Rothwell shop or its owners but, when they and we buy in Peacocks from the wholesalers they are very brightly coloured. In fact they are imported that way. When we go to Bayfish we will see lots of these brightly coloured peacocks of all sizes. Does this mean that the wholesaler or shop are feeding white crane - probably not. Are they colour fed overseas - very likely. But these peacocks are usually sold as a blue, red, yellow, ob peacocks. All of these are hybrids and usually end up in display tanks. Serious breeders usually do not breed these fish, especially when they are imported at such low prices. Peacocks sold by there real name eg Aulonacara stuartgranti usually arrive fairly colourless depending on their size. As for Tetra Color Bits, which is now known as Color Granules, it is a great food. It only has natural colour enhancers which tend to highlight more of the yellow, orange and red colours. The quality of the food is excellent. Will these brightly coloured peacocks eat other foods? Yes. We feed them nls, color bits, spirulina and we have been trialling Aqua One Colour Enhancer Pellets. We seem to be able to maintain these colours in about 90% of these peacocks. I hope this helps. I am still looking for people to try Aqua One Colour Enhancer food. We are giving away large samples, more than enough to experiment with. All we ask is that you give us feedback. All feedback so far has been mostly positive. I just don't like my fronnies gulping so much air when going for one pallet... Otherwise, excellent food. My Kadengo and Flameback have improved since that food was introduced ... I know they are mostly hybrids and I don't support breeding those. Thanks Russ for those answers. I'll keep looking around yet, I am in no hurry. I would join you for the bayfish trip and get some there but Carl has to work and he's the minster of finance around here. gtr73 Posted May 21, 2008 Report Share Posted May 21, 2008 That's spot on Russ. I used to seriously breed peacocks and a nice male would take at least 2 years before colouring up nicely. Probably the only way to get them to colour more quickly without hormone food was to grow them more quickly to an adult. Not to mention you need the ideal environment for a male peacock to really shine, i.e. he's the only male, he's not harassed by any other tankmates and he has 2-3 girls to show off to. That's why I stopped breeding them because people weren't interested in the grey colourless juvies and I wouldn't use White Crane. And Jenny, Matt "Waltec" was breeding some fantastic peacocks. He's had spare males from time to time. Also some superb specimens came up at the last auction. So there's still some nice peacocks around. I am still deciding if I will get a trio of peacocks or all boys. I have two other trios in there at the moment.
