dem0n
Hi All, I have an 8'x2'x2' freshwater tank with large central american cichlids (largest & biteyest is a 35cm dovii) & i want to get some suitable catfish for cleaning & the like. At the moment I have 2 x ~25cm salmontail catfish in the tank but thier behaviour annoys me (swimming around & around in one corner of the tank up against the glass). So I want to get rid of the salmontails & get some other type of catfish with cooler behaviour! I have bought a small sailfin pleco... but it's too small to put in the 8' tank yet (i've got it in a 4' tank with my rainbows till it grows big enough for the dovii to not eat.) I tried a ~10cm bristlenose but the dovii ate it... so i guess it's gonna take a while for the pleco to be big enough :perplex: :perplex: :perplex: Would any synodontis type catfish be appropriate? Or any other suggestions for suitable catfish? Thanx. Dave. EDIT :: Tank pH = 7.0-7.4 | Temperature = 23-24ºC
ryanwatts
preety sure a mature red tailed catfish will put up a fight!!!
QueenslandeR
redtail cat sounds like a dumb idea to me, it'll eat everything else that will fit in its mouth, it shouldn't take too long for the sailfin to be ready to go into the 8ftr, they grow real quick
hareysfish
sounds like , what the dovii will do to me, as well.
Dumpie
with my experince with my mums 50cm dovii u need to have a alot of solid, heavy shelter for the samller guys to find refuge in and plecs and b/ns are mostly nocternal so hopefully the big bloke will be sleeping or resting so that will let them do there job but for a 30 cm doviiwat do u feed him? dem0n
thanks for the feedback guys i have decided to keep the salmontails for now... & i've put in a gold spot pleco (12cm) & will add the sailfin pleco when it's big enough. i did a big gravel vac / water change this morning & the gravel / water are surprisingly clean... so maybe these guys aren't doing such a bad job! with my experince with my mums 50cm dovii u need to have a alot of solid, heavy shelter for the samller guys to find refuge in and plecs and b/ns are mostly nocternal so hopefully the big bloke will be sleeping or resting so that will let them do there job but for a 30 cm doviiwat do u feed him? there are plenty of hiding places for the smaller fish... i've just added more driftwood with lots of holes in it for the catfish to hide in. i usually just feed the dovii hakori pellets, spirilina pellets, shrimp pellets & the occasional feeder barb / crayfish... same food as all the fish in my 8' tank get latest pic :- ::Note:: the tank still looks a bit 'yellow' as the driftwood is putting out a LOT of tannins. i have some carbon in my sump to absorb it hopefully! DannyH
I have got a 40cm+ sailfin (from memory) pleco in one of my big outdoor ponds. He is really not liking this cold weather at the moment, so I am looking at moving him on for say $50? Let me know if you are interested.
