Yes Tannin is the stuff leached from your driftwood, they turn your water a brown color a bit like weak tea. The level of this staining depends on the amount of driftwood and it's age. Driftwood will slowly release less and less as it ages. You can remove it by using carbon in your filters.

you could always soak them for a few weeks and change the water they soaking in.... i just put mine straight in the tank and did more water changes and it took about 3-4 weeks and it was pretty much gone first few days the tank didnt look to clear, but either way will work, , i have boiled a few of the smaller pieces that worked well too...

I have a reasonable amount of driftwood in my tank and run Seachem Purigen to polish the water and remove tannins, but it also helps reduce Nitrates. Unlike Carbon, it's can to 'regenerated' when it's exhausted, and it also lasts a lot longer than carbon before needing to do this.

yeah i think wat ill do is ill do 25% water chages twice a week and would it be advisable to ad a small internal filter for a while and instad of sponges have carbon and purigen in it it to speed things up and also remove any toxins and nitrites at the same time?
