Lake Malawi Mbuna - any new species lately?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of any latest imports of Mbuna coming into Oz?

From memory Pseudotropheus Zebra Long Pelvic and Ps Msobo were the last "newbies" on the scene, but they arrived probably more than a couple of years ago now.

Always interested in seeing what's coming out of Malawi, being there's just so many species there.

Hmmm, that link is now broken for some reason. Let me try another link for Pseudotropheus sp. "Coral Red" . . . http://aquazoo-juzek.com/images/fish/pseudotropheus_coral_red.jpg

I see they're available in The Netherlands and North America. There's also a different strain of Msobo available in the hobby overseas.

And should correct myself: Msobo is a Metriaclima species, not Pseudotropheus as I mentioned above.

Last I heard from the importers were that Malawi cichlids were out of fashion. Geo's is the new craze.

They will come back though. They always do muhahahaha

Wow, Geo's the new craze? So everyone is switching from Africans to Americans? Don't they grow quite big? Everyone must have a 6 foot tank except me!

I can see why Mbuna have died down a bit. After the "instant wow" species like Elec Yellows, Red Zebs and Cobalt Blues that came earlier in the hobby, many Mbuna species to hit the scene afterwards looked great but only in the right conditions.

My own experience with my own Msobo, Zebra Long Pelvic and Neon Spot is they're truely stunning when being dominant and strutting around the tank, but if not stimulated they lose some of that spectacular colouring.

And unlike Yellows, Red Zebs and Cobalts (Albino Zebs and Saulosi too), the juvies of Mbuna that hit the scene later on can be a bit bland looking.

I guess you could say Labidochromis 'Yellow' are new. Bayfish have them on their list. No idea of the origin of the fish and how they came about. Might be a debatable subject.

I reckon the big American cichlids will make a comeback in the next 12 months. Not many people breeding them now because of the space issue. Not many being imported either. Old bloodlines and aging breeders should result in fresh blood and a resurgence from the yanks :egrin: Watch this space ...

Very nice those Heteropictus, they're the Msobo variant right? I've seen them on overseas forums, and a vid on Youtube too. I like em!

Msobo colonies might be pricey because I've been told by a couple of breeders the females are hard to get. Good that someone local has a colony - don't sell them, breed them Benni! :)

My display male is truely a spectacular fish, good temperment and females are a nice orange colour too, so a good species to have in the hobby.

I purchased some of these species a couple of months ago. I googled them and couldn't get any info on them. I sent an email to Bayfish enquiring about their origin and didn'tget a reply. After making a few enquiries with lfs owners about them i was told they are a crossbreed and were imported a couple of years ago. They are now being bred on the Gold Coast. Guess it won't be long before they are crossed with elect yellows. Once i knew they were a crossbreed i took mine back to the lfs and got a refund.

Brian.

MikeW in Sydney was selling juvies of these last year. I had never seen them before then.

Redlands Pet Centre has some at the moment. Very nice fish.

So the male is like the one in this YouTube vid? youtube.com/watch?v=T0gIPob17uE

This one is Msobo Heteropictus, which looks awesome. Just what I like in an Mbuna species - lots of colour, lots of activity.

As for prices, I saw MikeW selling the Ps Heteropictus on the Sydney forum for $5 @ 5cm. But I think he was clearing all his stock and getting out of Mbuna.

If the ones you have are the Msobo variety, they should prove reasonably popular.
