b-dizzle
G'day probably a weird topic but i have an old toy box i used when i was younger to house toys in. This box is made from timber but has some sort or lining(plastic or something)on the inside and out. This lining holds no chemicles i think...there are just screw holes in the lining to hold the box togther. I was wondering if i could silicon the screw holes and silicon all the gaps where the timber is divided...and then turn it into a 200L catfish breeding tank? If anyone has ever completed a project lik this then let me know. If everything went ok...i think i could run water in the box/tank for say 2 weeks and test for chemicles to prove if it is safe for fish? pics provided

Rusty
Hey mate, i'm pretty sure that's stuffs called malamine or something to that effect. It might hold water for a while but the pressure from the water would eventually seep through it. I remember reading about some guy who was building a ply tank but tried a smaller version with malamine to try and cut out the epoxy it held for about 4 days before busting. If you epoxy it could probably work. Cheers, Rusty
b-dizzle
G'day...um epoxy? is that a type of glue used for sticking the plastic stuff to the timber?. The box has been sitting at the side of the house like that for about 9years. I dont believe it has ever leaked after serious downpours. The inside looks to be in very good condition...i have also reanforced the timber(where conected) with nails from the outside leaving no holes inside. This mean under preasure there is no chance the timber is going to buckle or calapse. I'm just worried about the actual plastic sht* it seems to be water resistant with no sepage...but in saying that im not going to drive right in. -How bout i silicon all gaps twice over and fill it with say 30-40L...wait a few days and check out results aka any leckage ect -If leaking...ABANDON! -But if all is well...fill it to the top and circulate water for a week or two ps i wont add fish unless i am absolutly possitive it will suceed. More feedback please. Cheers, Brado
aquaholic99
You didnt mention adding a viewing panel so why dont you just line it with pond or swim pool liner? Both are pretty hard wearing and economically priced. Alternatively, you could try some thick gauge plastic sheet but this will get brittle with age/U.V. If your budget can afford it, buy some pool paint. Then you can use fish foam boxes or any rigid box too.
