My partner and i have 1 male 25cm 1 female 16cm in a 5' x 18 x 15, where they get along well, he is not very dominant or outgoing as he has been in with large colonies of mbuna for the last few years and there is always heaps of activity and fin nipping in his tank. Undoubtedly he would become more dominant and likely to breed in a species tank so i am wondering if my tanks 5' x 18 x 15 or 4' x 18 x 24 are big enough to put together a mature small colony and what numbers?I was thinking 1m 2-3 fm? would this work and could i regularly breed them this way? does anyone know of frontosa being bred in smallish tanks? thx for any advice, nicole and brett. aussie123 Posted July 1, 2008 Report Share Posted July 1, 2008 I was successfully breeding a trio of fronnies and a pair of blue dolphins in a 4x18x18. I had no roblems at all with them breeding regularly in that size tank. At the moment they are all in my 5 ft display but sometime next week they will be going back downstairs to the 4x18. -alixthekid- Posted August 18, 2008 Report Share Posted August 18, 2008 the bigger the tank you can put them in the better... 7 bars have to reach a certain maturity and size (3-4yrs) before properly breeding and holding although, they may start trying to breed earlier getting them to hold can be a different story.. and if the male does get aggressive during breeding you want as much tank space as possible for the breeding female to feel secure. I have my 7 bars in a 5x2x2 and intend on breeding them in this, I also have mates that breed small colonies of 6 bars... 1m3f in 4x2x2's and they seem to breed and hold just fine. Grumundi Posted August 21, 2008 Report Share Posted August 21, 2008 I would be very careful, I had a Trio of 7 bars in a huge 1000 litre tank, and the male was about 25cm, also very docile and never looked like hasling them, then his balls must have dropped and within 2 days he had killed one girl and beaten the other up severly. My advice would be at least 2-3 girls to the male, and put in some other fish to hassle him so he doesnt go after the girls. I always found venustus to be a good one, pretty big and hardy and quick.
