dude_753 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Share Posted July 5, 2008 hey guys, i need as many tips on breeding my com bn as possible I have a pair of bn com in a 2x1x1, the water is 25degrees, ph is 7.6 and i got 2 sponge filters in the tank It is not hooked up to a system! I do have a thin layer of cal carb in the tank (not sure if its wrong?) WHat my problem is i did not relize that they actually bred, i looked into the tank this morning and there is about 100 small bn fry dead and 4 alive. I have no idea y this is? WhoWeR Posted July 5, 2008 Report Share Posted July 5, 2008 For starters you could take out the calcium carb. BN do prefer softer water but they will breed in hard water. I have a trio breeding in a tank with my cichlids. I find bare bottom is best with bn, easier to clean up after the messy buggers. Bn bubs can very sensitive to water changes and parameters, especially in the first few weeks. When did you last do a water change? What are you parameters, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? As for being able to know when they have bred. I like to use a torch and check out my logs but a lot of people have problems when they do. The other way I have noticed is the male will spend a fair bit of time on the edge of his log waiting for a female. Once one has been in they usually go deep into the log and you wont see him for a while. Maybe in about a week and half he will slowly start coming further and further back out of the log. The bubs will slowly follow him and come out too. Feed them on zucchini, lebanese cucumber, algae wafers etc. You could lightly blanch the zucchini first to soften it for the bubs. benni Posted July 8, 2008 Report Share Posted July 8, 2008 i try to keep my TDS at less than 200, for water changes use 40% rain water and 60% tap water with about 1/4 teaspoon of seachem acid buffer this will be ph 7.0 (if ur tap water is 7.6) 2x 30% water changes every 10 days and 2 in a row when we get heaps of rain, thats how i breed my peps. feed the parents and the fry sera flora, hikari algae wafers, sera viformo and some zucchini. small amount in the morning and a bit more once the lights go out. They seem to be delicate up to around 3 weeks/2 cm. All I have done differently is made sure the water was clean as possible (I put an extra powerfilter in both) and an airstone. I reckon its the airstone that has done the trick. I am feeding them mostly on Hikari algae wafers. Sometimes a bit of zucchini. Two or three fry out and about yesterday. 100 dead ones this evening. Bugger. This is depressing. Batch 6 male and cave into floating fry tank tonight; time will tell.
