tmd77
Hey guys, My mum is a kindy teacher and wants to put a fish tank in her room for the little kiddies. Her tank is about the same size as a 45cmx23cmx23cm tank. She wants "pretty" fish that will breed easily so that the kids can watch the babies grow. Immediately i thought of guppies, but seeing as though im more into africans i wasnt sure what else is out there that would suit this scenario? i suggested common bn and then i could keep all the fry but apparently they are boring and ugly lol. any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers, Trent P.S nick, no mouthbrooding convicts
deathzone
I would Recommend some shell dwelers, some Neo. Multifasciatus, they bread very easy and you could put about 1m to 3 females in a tank that size.... And the parents look after the young also. They are interesting to watch but not the most colorful. Peter.
Rod
I'd suggest "endler" guppies Smaller than normal guppies with electric colours.....easily breed Pet city has real ones.....other are hybrids

Rod
difference between males and females? same as guppies females bigger with no colour how many could be kept in a tank this size? Start with one pair and start harvesting after a couple of months will the parents eat the fry? if they are true endlers....no, but hybrid females will eat fry how much are they worth per fish?..... $12.50 from Pet City but cheaper if hybrids There are lots of hybrids about....male endler x female guppy. "real" endlers are smaller and much more colourful Most shops(and hobbyists) selling endlers are selling hybrids This may not be a big issue for a tank for kids.....like most....they wont know the difference
jonoz
Convicts will breed easily in a tank that size, I think Matchu still has some pairs that have bred before...
Alibi
Another vote for the endlers here. I had/have 6 in a 27litre tank, but have had continual problems and now only have two females left (unfortunatley due to the problems they have never bred). The males are really beautiful and interesting to watch and the colours are amazing.
ssdiscus
I'd recommend Endlers too, for that size tank - they're very hardy and the males very colourful. I sell my pure Endler pairs for $10 - these originally came from Petcity. I'm happy to donate a couple of pair for your kids at school. Alibi
Arrrhh i am so jelous of you guys that your endlers are breeding. I also bought mine from pet city but a mystery disease had wiped out a total of 7 out of 9 and left one female deformed (was normal when i got her, now has a really strange hump underneath her front). Rod
If anyone is looking for endlers.....I can say Shaun (ssdiscus) has lots of very healthy guppies Even his hybrids are very nice fish!
gingerbeer
I don't claim to be an expert on endlers - but from what I have been told if you can see the black line going through they are probably not hybrids. Mine came from Pete (Smiley) and seem to be pure. He seems to have big nets too.
Rod
Just wish to clarify my previous post... I got some "endlers" from Shaun 6 or so months ago At the time he had 2 different strains. The Pet city strain and another....I got some of the other strain as I already had Pet City endlers At no time did Shaun claim that either strain were pure. I've concluded after breeding and observing both strains....that...in my opinion I believe the Pet City fish are a pure strain I believe the other strain Shaun had were hybrids....ie had some guppy blood(some males have very long dorsals and the females grow quite large) Mind you I have had comment when I posted the picture of my male Pet City "endler" on endlers R Us site that it was a hybrid!?! There is a world wide debate with regard what is a real endler and what is a hybrid....some hybrids look a lot like pure endlers...some look nothing like real endlers but are very attractive desirable fish. I'd take Shaun's very generous offer....all his fish (and plants)were very healthy.
