dont know why i didnt think of it before but check your ph aswell. old gal tanks are notorious for being full of decomposing gum leaves and can have ph as low a 4.0 (or lower) acidic water is as likely a cause of death as heavy metals and pathogens in the water

Hi you could possibly look into the zinc leaching from your galvanised tank, possibly checking all the parameters of your water would be a good start . you didn't mention the type of fish you are keeping and more importantly the water parameters they came from before putting in this tank?

that town/tank super dechlorit brand stuff is the only one that removes zinc that I know of

yeah superchlor from G.& K. Lloyd-Jones ? it does the trick though prime claims to detoxify any heavy metals commonly found in tap water and zinc is found through the results of zinc pipe fittings ;)
