if u pull him out or seperate them once the fry are gone and you put them back together again, they will most likely try and kill each other, i have heard thats quite common in americans. ive been told to keep them together. i currently have rivs and as of today they have "free swimming fry" and the parents are still together and very fine.

Usually both parents are happy to attend the fry.

If you leave the fry in too long the parents will want to breed again. When they try and breed again they will eat the fry from the last brood. So the best thing to do is syphon most of the free swimming fry and grow them up somewhere else. The parents will continue to look after the remainder. When the parents are ready to breed again they will eat the last batch but you should have plenty of time to catch them.

You can use a devider as well. I think you should always give the females a rest and allow them to build up their strength between broods. That why I seperate but keep them in the tank with a devider that the fry can swim through.

Often the males will harrass a female before she is ready and kill her anyway.

Once she fattens up and is egg bound the male and female are ready
