EOI for small home business - marine fish etc.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, (Mods is it alright to put this post here? i wanted the feedback of the local guys, i understand if i do start a business i will have to register as a business on the forum)

Ive really been looking into setting up a small home based business (my parents have done that before - but not aquarium related) at my house on the Sunshine Coast and am looking to hear what you guys think? Ive been looking into setting it up, equipment, energy efficiency, different suppliers etc, and think it might be worth it, but want some "market research" or feedback.

Would you drive up here for decent stock at decent prices? (As low as possible with a small profit).

What sort of livestock would you mostly be interested in? EG: Fish - Butterflies, Angels, Tangs, Red sea stock, Hawaiian stock, Locally caught stock, Corals, Liverock, Algae, Clams, Inverts etc. Theres allready so many dry goods suppliers online and LFS it would be silly to compete with them, but i think i might have a decent chance in live-stock sales?

Would you be interested in shipping? What is the most you would be willing to pay for shipping? - overnight, same day deliver, airport to airport etc.

Kordon breathing bags or just standard plastic aquarium bags? Heatpacks/coldpacks or just plain insulated box?

How would you prefer products/stock to be advertised? Facebook? Forum? A Website? Etc.

If theres enough interest hopefully i can organise some funding etc and make this a reality, i would start off small before expanding to suit the market. Any comments are appreciated.

This would be a side/hobby business to help offset the costs of my display tank etc, not my main income. Would also be great to get some industry experience, and if i start to profit i would look into breeding some fish species to allow us to avoid using wildcaught species.

Nick :)

u would be better off doing freshwater stuff because pretty well everyone on this forum has freshwater stuff. I would definatly buy stuff off u if it was freshwater.

best to sponcer qldaf and adveratise in the sponsers section. (u will have to ask grum if he has any spaces)

shipping would need to be in kordon breather bags for fish. and in winter may need a heatpack? another idear is u could do a delivery run each month and everyone pays for fuel. or u meet who ever is interested at a pet shop in brisbane

i'b buy salt water stuff off you as i dont know of many places around the coast doing salt water(i know there is some) and i to have also thought about doing the same thing, the main problems i see would be suppliers and how much you'd charge for products...

It worries me that right off the bat, you're committing your business to only ever turn a small profit.

Focus on making your business profitable and sustainable before you start worrying about how cheap you can make everything, otherwise it won't last.

I posted on this forum to see what the thoughts were from the perspective of a mostly freshwater forum, i also posted it in RTAW/reefuge because theyre two competing reef forums and i was interested in the reefing sides perspective.

Ive been aquarium keeping since i was 6 (first tank - goldfish haha) and always had at least 1 tank since then, at my old house i had 15 freshwater tanks running and 3 marine tanks running at the same time before i slowly shut them all down except my current display marine tank.

Ive only been reef-keeping for the last 3 or so years but had at least 2 years research before that, im planning on just starting out small (10-20) 4x2x1.5ft tanks (each with a removable divider in the middle) on a sumped system with 2 large skimmers etc, and then adding on to the system if necessary.

Ive allready got the business name, logo, slogan, domain name etc worked out, also the location on the property, how its going to be setup etc. Just organising funding and seeing what the general feedback is before i go ahead.

Cool what's the name ? Sounds like u got everything sorted apart from what your going to sell lol

Start of with easy to breed and frag marine critters As DFF said

Tangs butterflies and angels are by far the most colorful in my opinion ( that what alot of buyers are after ... Colour )

Take a look at " the propagator" on nano reef he has an excellent example of a frag setup was taking a look at it a few days ago anyways mate goodluck
