Hennessy
Hey guys, Whats the "WHITEST" fine gravel (or large-grain sand) you can get that doesn't affect PH (or buffers it to neutral). I don't want super fine sand as it gets sucked up by my gravel pump. Whatever you suggest, do you know where I can get some in Brisbane?
frinkie
I know there is something called "heavy sand" and its still white as but won't get sucked up when you gravel vac - i have no idea where to get it though (and was considering putting up a thread similar to yours!) Am very interested to hear what other members think thanks for posting the thread!
Hennessy
Perhaps sand is going to have to be it, as some research I did today would indicate that silica is the only fine white substrate that wont affect PH.
regani
There is a very fine white sand that you can get at many landscaping places, it usually comes from North Stradbroke. it is quartz, so doesn't affect ph. you may have to look around as not all places acrry it all the time. I usually get mine from Redback Landscaping Redback Garden Centre - home
The Monty
And that would be fine to use in a Cichlid tank? Whats it actually called, and do you have to treat it or anything?
The Monty
Redback Garden Centre - products Hang on, got it. Is this the one?
frinkie
I think the idea is to steer clear of the fine stuff as it would get sucked up when you gravel vac...
nugget2107
i prefer a very thin layer and let the fish shift it around,no gravel vaccing, but thats in my breeding setups,no good for display unless your only using rocks.bunnings play sand 20kgs $9.80 white as....... holden1862
I think the idea is just to suck some on the sand up when doing water changes, than just put it back in once rinsed.

frinkie
play sand at bunnings is fine, but you'll need to put aside a few hours cleaning it
