Bundy1
All, Looking for thoughts or known ways of how to pack a 3 tier (tray) external filter. What media /filter wool/carbon..etc....would be best used and in what order. Someone may have a proven way that works really well. Thanks.
Syndicate
carbon is a waste of time i reckon get some purigen if your keen for some chemical filtration , filter wool will most like clog pretty fast i just use sponge , Aquaclay is a good quality media thats well priced , or just pack it full off ceramic rings cheap but very effective
bjc90
id go matrix in 2 and then put purigen in the other one (in bags of course)

bjc90
so is it a canister filter or similar to a sump?
Sebastian
i would always put ceramic noodels(mech) in the bottom tray as it wont clog up as fast. middle tray bioballs or substrat pro with a thin layer of sponge on top. top tray would have substrat pro + sponge on top in case you used bioballs in the middle tray or just sponge. i personally dont belive in carbon. try to get finer in your filter material towards the top. keep your sponges in there. 028NVD
I've done as recommended to me by other members here, put no filter pads in the filter and stick a chunk of sponge over the intake pipe of the filter, minimal mess in the filter=win, remove the sponge while leavin the filter going about once a week and give it a squeeze out. Put sponge back in intake, all done
