clinto86
Hi all today when was moving my frontosa fry into the grow tank I stumbled on my male peppermint fanning eggs (have a trio in there it is their first ever spawn) i have moved him and his cave (large piece of larva rock) into its own tank with taking the same water and have set the tank to the same temp Have never had or try ed to breed them as have been concentrating on my fronts so a few questions # should i take the eggs out and tumble them # do they take around the the seven day mark to get heads and tales (like fronts) # If they get pushed out should i tumble them # best food for the fry Any feedback, suggestions and experiences would be appreciated as am new to them Thanks in advance Clint

clinto86
Thanks mate the male and eggs have tank to them selves have put breeding net around hang over filter to prevent getting sucked up and have a algae build up on ornaments just timber as in drift wood do you mean?? so hope fully all goes well other then that no tricks i need to know?? Will the males push the eggs out? or just abandon the cave? if things go bad
Brengun
If eggs are no good the male might kick them out or eat them. If you get fry the male will allow them to stay in the cave until after the egg sacks on the fry are absorbed. Even when fry are sneaking out and feeding on cucumber or zucchini, the male will still let a few come back home to sleep for quite a while. clinto86
OK so this will take a while then when the fry are feeding on cucumber and other food (jumping the gun a bit) but then would be the time to take the male out and put him back with the two females in the other tank?? Is this correct Have noticed them today so i should have seen movement by about seven days from now hey if not this would mean the eggs were infertile is this correct? Keegan013
You should deffinately see movement in a few days if the eggs are still orangey coloured.. Do you feed your adults zucchini or algae wafers or anything like that? When the eggsacks are gone they should start forreging for food. If you usually feed the adults zucchini and algae wafers then add a bit extra cause the fry should get straight onto that as well.. They will also feed off the excrements (Fancy word for Poo, Cuase poo is an "icky" word) of the adults which is why its a good idea to leave them in with the parents still for a fwe weeks/ months if you have the room.... Make sure there is driftwood in the tank as its a vital source of food for them and helps them digest.. If you want the fry to survive then basically keep them in there own tank.. There breeders now, Not display fish lol..
clinto86
Yer have run out of room for tanks lol will have some more convincing to do what would be the smallest tank you could set a trio up in as am i little pushed for space. by the way keegan the ones i got of you are still goin strong
Keegan013
Thats good to hear mate. Well you seen my little setup. Very minimal space and all the tanks are 2 foots.. Depending on how much they breed you shouldnt need anymore then 3 or 4 tanks for fry to growout..
clinto86
Quick update male is still in cave with the majority of the eggs but two have fallen out (or been pushed) one of the eggs looks like it will be no good but the other is very good with a head and a tale moving around. So have put both in the egg tumbler and will watch over them Quick question does the eggs have like a clear cause around the yellow internal (because when i started the tumbler it seemed to fall away which allowed the tale and head to move around)

Keegan013
So how old are the free swimming fry now? I would've personally left the fry in with the adults for a good 3 or so weeks..
clinto86
about a week and a half was planing to leave them but being first time am a little bit jumpie thought i might need to get the larva rock out as it has many little holes and to be honest i thought there was none in there till i started to pull it out and this way i could get them when they were in the same concentrated area

Brengun
Where are the fry? In the parent tank or in a newly set up little tank of their own? Why I ask is that the single biggest killer is that scum that builds up on new frysavers and little tanks. You can clean it off every day until it settles but really the best idea is to set up a fry saver in the tank and leave it there. Throw a couple guppie fry or shrimp in there to keep it cycled and ready for fry. I had a dinky little floating saver I put some whip and pep fry in and lost a couple every darn day. I did clean the saver with a brush every day but it didnt seem to make any difference. I drip acclimatised them over into another tank with a seasoned fry saver that already had pep fry in and they never looked back. Temps aren't really that bad as long as it just an odd day or two and you have loads of airstone air in the tank. I had a heater jump to 35C once or more. Actually it was 35C after I did a 30% wc, so goodness knows what it was before. Never lost a whiptail or a pep fry or a shrimp as I had heaps of bubbling air in the tank.
