smicko
just chasing some suggestions for filters. i have been told that it's not ideal to run air powered filters on a planted tank. i will not run co2 if it can be helped. tank contains java moss, thin val, elodea, and another vey delicate plant i cant remember the name of. would i even need a filter with only cherrys in the tank? cheers, mick
liljohn_83
you would probably do ok but i would atleast put an air driven sponge in thair for circulation say a 100 lph sponge and a verry small air pump and a temprature guage as heet isent good for anny shrimp and it may get warm depending wear you put it
smicko
thanks liljohn. i've had cherry shrimp for years, but i decided to do an aquascape for my daughters tank so first time with plants on this scale. i have the air setup you speak of but i have been told that they realease carbon dioxide as the bubbles break the surface. not sure if it makes a real difference, but i want the plants to thrive without chemicals or added co2. all input appreciated. cheers, mick
shazvana
I know this is an older thread but I just thought I would give my thoughts as I have a similar set up. I have a 5x1.5x1.5 tank with Cherry Shrimp and BN. At first I used only sponge filters as I was told this would give air to the shrimp/BN and filter water at same time but I found the water was never crystal clear. So hubby and I set up a piping system that attached to a canister filter and on the end of the pvc pipes in the tank, we attached sponge filters. This way no shrimp could be sucked up unless a pipe comes loose. So I have 4 sponge filters (large ones) attached to this pvc pipe line that attaches to the canister filter piping and I have 2 large sponge filters that just work off air pumps like normal. I find this keeps my tank crystal clear now and I have no problems with water quality anymore. All my plants are beautiful and green and grow like wild fire, I have Elodea, Val, Java moss, Java fern and Anubias nana. I don't use any Co2 at all, I had a fellow member come here ages ago and he was shocked how green and lush all my plants are and he swore I used Co2, I had to show him the set up to convince him I didn't, it was just plain old water and shrimp/BN waste:) I have never put any fertilizer in either cause I was told it's harmful to the shrimp so I just never bothered but I don't know how much truth is to this or not, one day I will check into it:) I hope this helps somehow even though it's a late response.
