rob-cichlid
Hay guys I wrote a post a week or so ago on cleaning driftwood. I done that to the best of my abilit, boiling water with a bit of salt and a good couple scrubs with a brush. My next 2 dilemas are as follows, I've had both pieces in my small 2 ft getting water logged for the last 8 days the water has turned urine yellow and the wood doesnt want to sink. I've only ever bought prepared driftwood in the past so any help with these 2 issues would be greatly appreciated as I am a bit weary of putting the pieces in my main while they are still seaping out the yellowie colour from the timber. Cheers, Rob
discus_noob
The urine is the wood releasing tannins into the water which is natural and expected, and as for the water logging it can take MONTHS for some pieces to fully be water logged unfortunately. Both are normal when you add driftwood to a tank so do not fear
Dexter
Water Staining = Tannins In all plants and trees, tannins are used as defensive compounds that counteract bacteria and fungi by interfering with their surface proteins. There are rivers in the Amazon that are so filled with tannins that the water is stained to the color of tea and very few organisms can actually thrive in this water. These rivers are called "blackwater" habitats. It just so happens that many fish from the "blackwater" habitats of the Amazon seems more susceptible to disease. Coincidence? We don't think so. Some pieces take longer than other to water-log. I tied a big rock of something heavy to my wood to help it stay submerged, therefore "Hopefully" Waterlogging the wood faster. holden1862
The tannis will be there for a while, for atleast a fee month it will be releasing it, I would put something heavy on top of it to Help weigh it Down. Nothing to worry about tho

noyakfat
The large log in my 8 ft display is currently weighed down with 3 x big zip-lock plastic bags filled with wet river sand. I learned the hard way about previously water-logged wood requiring re-soaking after lengthy time out of water
