sarah1234
Just wanted to share that my female b. macrostoma is finally responding to my males flirting efforts. While he is putting on a stunning display she is wagging her body and not chasing him away with her giant mouth of doom! Very happy with this progress so cross fingers it leads to some baby macs XD. Took out their divider yesterday after a huge waterchange, it was set up so the smaller male could get from side to side but not the large meanie of a female. Decided the tank was more than well planted enough. Lets see what happens from here .

DeadFishFloating
wow a quick google and............ lol do you remove the female? seems to be the million dollar question! First off: Remember that the parents DO NOT need to be separated (and this includes from the fry). This is the rule, not the exception. If you have a pair that is unusually aggressive, then you need to experiment with how to keep them. Out of all the pairs we have ever successfully bred, we have never had to separate the parents. But we do add PLENTY of hiding places for when someone is cranky! At this point (or even before spawning) make sure you have your aquarium completely covered. The male is very apt to swallow the eggs if he sees movement around the tank! If the spawning was successful he will carry the eggs/babies for about 20-22 days. Generally the male will eat the eggs around days 3-5 if something went wrong. We usually found this to be linked to PH (meaning it was too high at the time of spawning). After 20-22 days he will spit them into several "safe" places in the tank. Neither the male or the female should bother the babies. Keeping and breeding betta macrostoma. Post-spawning it is very important to give the male as much peace and quiet as possible. Males of this species are notorious for swallowing broods of eggs after a few days (especially young fish) and the chances of this happening increase if the male is unduly disturbed. For this reason most breeders leave the female in situ rather than risk unsettling the male by removing her. The male will tend to seek a hidden or shaded spot and will lose much of his colour during the incubation period. Even with these measures many keepers have reported that the male constantly eats the eggs after a few days, in some cases after 10 or more spawnings have occured! Patience would appear to be a virtue with this fish. The incubation period appears to be capable of varying tremendously with reports suggesting a range of 14 - 35 days. This would seem to be at least partly temperature-dependant but when ready the male will release fully-formed fry from his mouth. Once these are free swimming you may wish to remove the male as if the female attempts to spawn with him again too soon he may begin to starve. Giving the male a recovery period and plenty of good food post-brooding is highly recommended by some breeders while others simply keep the pair together constantly. Some keepers also leave both parents in with the fry and they are said not to harm them. Others remove the adults or fry and raise the young separately. Brunei Beauty (Betta macrostoma) - Seriously Fish It is not necessary to remove the female immediately after spawning, but she should be removed prior to the release of the fry in order to prevent him from mating again. For the next 3-4 weeks, don't be surprised if you never see the male. It can be quite freaky the first time round, constantly worrying that he might have died somewhere in the rocks or something. But if you have conditioned him correctly, and if he is healthy to begin with, then you shouldn't worry too much. In fact, if you see him after a week two, you can be sure that he has eaten the eggs and you have lost the clutch. So in fact, you actually want him to disappear for at least 3 weeks because he will only emerge if he has eaten the eggs or released the fry. www.ventralfins.com - Breeding Betta Macrostoma
raycam01_au
the female has not been removed, there is a divider if necessary which is currently not in, which will be placed back in to allow separation so far everything is working perfectly for the first timers such a good day
sarah1234
Donny that Sultan post is officially my favourite post OF ALL TIME!! Leaving the female in so far. Not wanting to disturb them as it would be a huge fuss to catch her. she seems mellow enough. Same with divider, leaving it out unless really necessary. A huge fuss to squeeze that back into the tank and he always freaks when I move it. He has gone into hide mode and is living between the 3 terracotta pot caves. Very concealed and very dark. Female is wandering around with nothing to do now lol.
sarah1234
Still holding thismorning. I had a sneak peak and almost flipped out when I thought he had swallowed! But on a second look definately still holding. Bloody mouthbrooders are nervewracking!
sarah1234
Male has gone into hiding to the point where it seems he has dissapeared off the end of the earth. though in such a densely planted tank i'm sure he has found a little cave like area that I can't look into to hide in. hope all is going well.
