Is this Anchorworm on my goldfish?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My bro bought a dozen neon tetras from the pet store yesterday, and 24 hours later I noticed something strange on one of the goldfish, is this anchorworm, could it have come from contaminated neons/pet shop water?

The picture isn't that clear, but it looks like lernaea to me, the split top is a dead giveaway. Common to goldfish (along with fish lice) since they are bred out of doors generally. When keeping goldfish I recommend having a bottle of AquaMaster Para-Cide. Its Trichlorfon and its strong - and slightly dangerous (see my Meds sticky for info). Use one tablet for 40litres. Make sure that you don't forget to treat after 7 days as we want to destroy the entire cycle of the parasite. You don't have to do a water change with this med as it breaks down in water. Make sure your UV is off if you have it and remove carbons and absorption resins. Good luck!

It probably wouldn't have come from the neons, its not that common on small tetras. Usually the eggs come in the guts of the goldies and they poo them out and they hatch later. Thats why you have to treat again in 7 days, to make sure any babies that have been pooed out are destroyed also

Sorry about the bad photo i've now removed the thing and here's a closeup of it.

If it is learnaea, having now removed it, would it be better to wait and see if any more pop up, or drop the chems in now to prevent any possible outbreak.

I'd add the meds mate.

Thats an adult by the looks of things, which means its likely been in there as long as the goldfish it came off.

meaning its likely to have dropped babys

as a sidenote..... neons arent the best thing to add to goldfish tanks. Not so bad in summer....... but they will need a heater come winter
