Worming discus - impact on tetras in tank

Recommended Posts

I have a 550 litre planted community tank with 10 medium size discus. I have recently increased the amount of food that I have been giving them and they have responded in kind. (They have had increased feeds of dozen bloodworm and freeze-dried blackworms.) They seem quite healthy and are very hungry. However, I have really never seen them pass any excretement. On this basis, I am presuming that I need to worm them. While I have had most of these fish for almost 2 years, I have not wormed them for quite some time.

I have the product AQUAWORM (from Science Products, prazi being the active constituent) which I would like to use. However it cautions on the use of this medication on tetra species. Unfortunately, I have 12 harlequin tetras in the community tank. It is not really practical removing either species for the purpose of worming.

1. Would you agree that worming is a good thing to do, particularly if the discus don't seem to be passing solids?

2. Has anyone had any experience using this worming product in a tank with tetras?

Thanks for your advice.

Hi, I enquired about this when i got my discus... i am only a beginner with discus but just passing on to you what was told to me .... i was told by supplier to buy worming tablets and worm often as discus are prone to worms.... when i went to my aquarium shop whom i trust very much and she loves discus . .she informed me that the tablets he told me to give them would kill my $110 catfish ...ouch .. the safest she said was to use Sterazin by water life... every six months ... if you have any of the fish on the bottle that it warns to be careful with or fry it says to half dose ... i have white fin ornate tetras and black stripe tetras ...

Most discus owners do say worm often. Now first thing to say is there is an expert on this board - so do what Rod Lewis says.....

Personally - I say for what it is worth, if your fish are happy and healthy and growing don't panic and be happy. Are your fish growing?

Feeding my perspective is that fish have a relatvie small gut trat, so when you overfeed they poo more. Doesn't mean they are healthier as excess food tends to be pooed straight out. (Not like the typical Aussi who puts on a gut... never seen a fat fish).

Personally I am not a fan of bloodworms. Like otehr foods better - but that is me. Bloodworms have stories of huting the guts of fish especially dwarfs. Having said that I love the advice of Douglas Adam's, "Don't Panic".

Rod Lewis is the guru and if he disagrees with anything I have said - Go with what he says!

Hope this helps somewhat,

Steve
