Choosing a Ranchu

Recommended Posts

Hey found this picture of how to roughly choose a Ranchu for side view body shape, not sure if it's a concise guide but it may help to show what not to buy? :)

Also some acceptable body shapes.

I have been looking for these types of guides for others ryukin, oranda ect but can't really find anything but just going by these guides you can see what not to buy.. Still sometimes it's hard not to buy one because it's cute and $10. Just thought I'd share maybe some others have more opinions and advice? These don't go into color or anything just shape really.

yeah nice stuff Mat...these guys would know there stuff (singaporeans) and these are definitely good basics for selecting ranchu...along with good headgrowth....and a strong swimming style...the fish shouldnt swim like its a hard thing to do :) Ive also learnt that the top of the tail should not rise above the highest part of the back curve....the more perfect the body shape,etc...the higher the grade...in the asian markets they have about 5 grades ranging from C i think up to AAA(top show quality)...and patterns and colours come into it with these top grade guys too...similar to koi judging....

Also notice the pointed head growth "funtan" or cheek headgrowth that protrudes foward at the front like a nose viewed side on... thats a general sign(plus smaller tucked tails)of ranchu bred in thailand and singapore...the chinese ranchus have a flatter face and a larger tail generally not as tucked and pretty much no "funtan"....

The two hardest things I find breeding wise is obviously the smooth curved back...but also a nice tail...they can "fan" out similar to a butterfly and appear flat(nice from the top but weak for swimming and no good on a side view ranchu)...or can be high up and not well tucked at the back...and it can change with how they are raised..as there body shape develops....then its just getting the headgrowth pumping...

from my understanding Mat...the "wen" is the basic overall headgrowth...and the "funtan" is a more specific part of the headgrowth...its the cheek area and protrudes foward....you can get a ranchu, lionhead, oranda, etc with a good "wen" but good "funtan" is not so common...its more common on some of the fish from japanese origin(top view ranchu and oranda)...like alot of the bloodlines, breeds runnin(swimming really!)around in thailand and singapore which have been influenced by top view ranchu, etc imported from japan...

ha ha good way to put it too mate...if you see it up close..mutton chops is probably the best way to describe the look... :)

...its hard stuff to get right...you want the mutton chops but not the afro...if that makes sense :) ...easy to get a fro going but just the chops and a little on the top...not so easy...gives more of a square to rectangular head shape when viewed from above...which is the look the japanese are trying to achieve....

Hey! :)

The spine should have a smooth curve,

The fins should be even like lots of them have a tail that one side kinda flicks up and the other down? If that makes sence..

It's really great to have the growth on the cheeks as well as the head..

There are so many factors! If you go into pet city there is some good quality huge ranchu you can have a look at and compare the shape to others to get an idea.

Also I think goldenswimmers will have some for sale soon :) and he is the best breeder in aus that I know about ! He has some super nice ranchu and is a really nice bloke to boot! :)

There are some really good goldfish forums to go on also google the **** out of ranchu and you will quickly get an idea of what they should look like.
