the cichlid kid
Hi guys, I've been doing a bit of the research on these fish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus - ornate rainbowfish) and I really like them. I would like to get some in the not to distant future but there are just so many localities. I just want people to post up pics of there's and specify what locality it possible so I can see what's available and make a decision on which 'locality' I would like get. Thanks, Beau. grubby
Mate come to the next ANGFA meetings, which I think is the 3rd Friday in February and take your pick at the auction, last auction there were about three Rhad morphs up for sale. Teerwah creek and Searys creek at least from memory. You can come along even if you are not a member.
the cichlid kid
I like the seary's creek, more blue in those ones. What about the 'carland creek' variety? Are they readily available? I probably won't have their tank setup in time to get them this time around. Are the ANGFA meetings monthly?

THese are from a small un-named creek as far as I can tell from maps anyway, up near the Tuan area. It's not Poona Ck though, could by Tuan creek or even an upper trib of the Mary system

NativeHunter
Dont remember seeing any Rhads at the ANGFA auction this month, hopefully there will be some next meeting. Seems that the Rhads from further north have better colours. ANGFA is planning a trip to Rockhampton this year, most northern location for finding R. ornatus. I have some R. ornatus from cooloothin ck, they have some nice blues and reds in them. Really glad i got hold of some, they are a fantastic fish! They breed like crazy in tubs outside If you have too many males they will harrass the females. So try and get a good mix and have some good hiding spots for the females so they can disappear if they are getting harrassed too much. Sry for the terrible photo
grubby
Yeah there were none, nor any blue eyes other than P Signifer. December meeting was good for Rhads and Blue Eyes. Edited February 16, 2012 by grubby

If my fry keep growing at the rate they are, I might have some Rhads for the next meeting... Hoping there will be some more Blue Eyes at the next auction, they are a stunning little fish. Leo
ANGFA QLD meetings are the 2nd Friday of every second month starting in February. Next meeting is Friday 13 April I keep several localities of rhads. I am currently breeding the following: Searys Ck, Teewah Ck, Poonah Ck, Evans Head, 2 creeks on Stradbroke Island, and an orange rhad (it's the only orange rhad I've ever caught) from a secret location. I'll start a different thread with images. If you know what you want I can bring them down to the April meeting for you.

DavidTullee
Males are more colorful with more pointed fins. The females fins are rounded and they generally don't hav as much coul over their bodies.

Agreed, although I'd add to that description: Males - Pointed fins that extend all the way to the caudal (base of the tail fin) Females - rounded fins that stop short of the caudal. Leo
Also what's the preferred male to female ratio? It will be a display tank, not interested in breeding them. looking at maybe 6 fish. If they are just for display, I'd stick with all males. If you think you might breed them at a later date, keep uneven numbers of males and females; at a 1:1 ratio the females can receive too much attention and lose condition.
