rwhelan
Hi everyone, just lookign for some opinions from some of you knowledgable people I have recently set up a 4x3x2 (L x h x w) medium planted tank and have 2x20cm air bubbler/tubes running of a double outlet airpump. This is in addition to running a spray bar (submersed) and direct inlet from our 2 canister filters. We are trying to keep our tank between 28.5 and 29.5 degrees. Tank inhabitants inlcude 2 corys and 4 blue rams at this stage. Is this enough airation? I notice the corys coming up to the surface mainly at night and was wondering if it was because there is not enough oxygen in the water? Water parameters seem fine (0 ammonia 0 Nitrite and 5ppm Nitrate) but ph is 7.5.
cram
Corys do this normally - it does not necessarily mean there is insufficient oxygen.
UnexplainedWays
not a fish expert, but i'm running 2 air pumps (~200L/H each), water being moved from a canister spray bar and an internal facing upwards so i have heaps of movement in a 4x2. Also have a ~800L running into 2 air stones but it's on a timer for a couple of hours @ night. They still seem to be coming up.
liljohn_83
corys will gulp air from the surface they want to if they wer at the top all the time then thair is a problem your filtration sounds fine to increase surface airation just mke the spray bar break the waters surface if you are worried
Pet_City
Corys do that as they have slightly modified gills to be able to gulp air from the surface of the water Air pumps do not always aerate properly. The most efficient means of aeration is actually power heads pointed at the surface of the water creating a "rolling" action. This agitation of the surface has more area in relation to the size of your tank rather than a group of bubbles breaking only a section. Fine bubbles are better than large bulbous bubbles also. So make sure you have a good airstone.
DeadFishFloating
True as that is, I love big bubbles. They just look awesome even from a distance and they cost me less air pressure. That said, you can hear my fishroom from the surrounding suburbs bubble bubble bubble
rwhelan
Thanks guys! I am a newbie to fishkeeping and really appreciate your words of widsom. The corys are only going to the top whe the lights are off so Iam guessing its just their natural behaviour I have a spare airstone on hand and might swap one of the airtubes today just to be on the safe side. Much appreciated everyone!
Inkozana
My cory's will go to the surface every now and then and I have 24/7 aeration as well as a waterfall filter. They are so cute.
