Heater failure insurance.

Recommended Posts

Lately I am hearing of fishkeepers losing their fish due to heater failure and their fish become cooked and its happening far too often lately with many of the heaters all made now in China.

I have had the same thing happen a few times with even Jager heaters but luckily I was home and caught them in time and only lost a few L catfish.

Enough is enough and I have just ordered a temperature monitor for every one of my tanks now after trialling a couple and they are fantastic!

Set your lowest you want, say 24C and highest say 32C and an intermittant beeping alarm will go off should the tank water temp exceed your perameters.

The beeping is loud enough to be heard upstairs here and on a very hot day its been great since then I go an turn on a fan and open the tank lid to cool the water.

Here is the link. Age of Aquariums - Marina Aqua - Minder

Photo of it p_27258_36712DZ.jpg&c=resize&p=190x300

Its one of the most accurate temperature readers I have ever had and it works on a couple of button batteries provided in the sale.

OK you just had a heart attack at the $37.50 price? Yeah I know. I google searched all over and that was the cheapest one available. But wait a sec.

Age of Aquariums is a sponsor here and is offering 10% discount for all forum members. When you do your order, in shipping details or notes quote qldaf forum discount member, and your forum name.

How good is that? No excuses for cooked fish now. :D

Is it true that in summer it is better to just turn the heaters off but leave them in the water so the seals etc don't dry out? I thought I read somewhere that is you take them out and store them then put them back in again in the winter that is where you can get problems? I have Jagers and they have been great. But I keep them in the water all year. I admit to never turning them off - (only on WC day - out of habit when the water level drops to WC) - but just thought maybe i should turn them off in the summer but leave them in the tank? I have smaller fish that really are not boisterious.

Hey Brengun, did you check out Redlands Pet Center prices? I bought one of these at Redlands about 2 weeks ago. I'm sure it wasn't that much, in fact I am sure I only paid around $20 for it

well thats a bit silly considering you live at browns plains and AoA will beat anyones price by 10%

Dumbster you might think this is "silly" but AoA's website states that they will beat any "advertised" price by 10%. Redlands hasn't advertised this product so how could AoA beat it by 10% ?

I don't make many comments on this forum but I do regularly try and keep up with new posts. I am stating this because last time I made comments someone had a go at me because I was new and then implied because of that I shouldn't be offering my opinion.

Look I used to buy tons of stuff from AoA and Ben is a top bloke. What I do hate is that they have to be forced down in price by other shops just to get a "good" price from them. This Aqua Minder that Bregun has kindly alerted us to is a great example of what I am talking about. AoA is $37.50 plus $7.50 if you want it posted out. Redlands price is (and I have just phoned to confirm this - sorry to the girl at Redlands that I totally confused with my questions) and Redlands price is $19.99 and if I want it posted to Browns Plains it is only $5.50 for postage. This is a massive price difference. I just want to support the guy that offers me the best price every day of the week. Redlands does this for me. I don't usually get things posted out as I like to look at and buy lots of things when I make the drive down to Redlands. I then loop back past Pet City, have a look a the fish and back home.

I don't want this to be an argument about which shop is better and who is "silly" and who isn't. I just tried to add to a thread where some one found a product that could benefit all of us. Brengun stated a price and I just added that a much better price was available from another one of our sponsors which I have now confirmed to be true.

Cheers

Nicko

Dubster I could not understand why you have attacked my name by changing nicko to d-i-c-k-o until I was just showing a mate your comment and then he pointed out my terrible mistake on my previous posting. I have called you "Dumbster" and not "Dubster". I can assure you that this was not intentional. It is not a typo, it was just that I had read your name incorrectly and then typed in how I had read it. Again, please be assured that it was definately not intentional. My intention of that post was to purely state facts and not get into a slinging match or insult anyone especially you.

But, getting back to AoA's 10% price beating, I have copied this directly from the AoA website:

We'll bet any advertised price by 10% Ckick here - and when I click here this is what it says:

Please contact us at sales@aquariumproducts.com.au or Phone on 07 3800 5592 If you find an identical product at a lower total price ( including cost of delivery ) on an Australian competitors website. Product must be identical and in stock. Policy excludes online auction sites and Grey Imports. For further clarification please contact us at sales@aquariumproducts.com.au or phone 07 3800 5592 ( Ask for Ben ).

This clearly says "Australian competitors website". It simply doesn't say they match "any price" by 10%. May be Ben needs to clarify this for all of us and then if his website pricing policy is incorrect as Dubster believes, then he should change it to reflect his actual pricing policy and avoid the confusion we appear to be having.

lol obviously we had a little misunderstanding than, all good nicko.

im not sure about the wording thats something you would have to discuss with Ben, but i have never had any issues and they have been more than willing to match any price for me.

cheers

Thank for doing the research Nicko. So there is Redland Pet Center and Age of Aquariums available.

Now we need a discussion on the best heater. I have long thought perhaps some of the not so pricey ones might be pretty good, especially those with brand names that go back quite a few years. Up to now I have played it safe and just bought Jager which I thought to be the safest.

Anyone else got some suggestions?

*BTW is there is a discussion on heaters already, can someone find me the link please. :)

I have used other brands in the past until I discovered jaegar and I love them, never had a problem with them.

I did google the product in discussion though (Aqua minder) and found that alot of people have found them to be abit unreliable in their readings - often 1 - 2 degrees above the actual temp compared to other thermometers side by side. Interesting.

anyway, any product that is helpful is great of course and the alert alarm is an asset.
