xysti53
Great to see an early finish for once with everything over and done by 11:45pm. We were locking up after cleaning the hall up by12:30am. This was a Moscow Guppy night with heaps going through - more guppy's than I have seen at an auction for ages. But it was good to see a lot less bristlenose, electric yellows and electric blues. All up there was a good variety of fish, probably could have had more natives, but overall a good mix of fish, plants and other items. Dan was used as a trial for the suggested Dry Goods Tables and there has been a fairly good response to this so once QFAS sort out a few rules I feel certain dry goods tables will go ahead. The response has been both good and bad. I had people saying they did not like the idea and if they were forced to sell all dry good on tables they just would not come to the auctions. Dan loved it and said he sold more from the table than he would have been able to through the auction. I would like to hear how those attending tonight's auction felt about the dry goods tables. Did you like the idea or not? If not why not? If you like the idea but feel it can be done better HOW? I will point out that one rule has already been set by Q.F.A.S. and that is nothing living will be sold through tables, so do not post saying that plants or electric yellows or bristlenose should be sold on the tables because that will not happen. While I am about it is there anyone out there that can write programs? If so I would like to talk to you so please pm me. Graeme
thommo2020
I could not go last night, had an offer to good to pass up (free beer). I do support the dry goods table and will try and run one myself next time. It will save plenty of time for the fish to be auctioned. Imagine an auction with no buckets or driftwood, no wonder it finished early last night. Cheers Thommo
DeadFishFloating
Well Dan is the man and certainly looked after me with dry goods last night. So yea I think its a good idea. I missed out on some of the bulk foods I usually nab on the night........ so if a table means that sellers can perhaps bring a few more lots on the night, thats win win for all. Fish Junkie
Tables are a great idea for dry goods as it lets more fish get auctioned on stage. Most dry goods can have a price on them where fish are more of a supply and demand item (if you want it you will pay for it) and anything that stops Steve from whinging is a good thing (love ya Steve) I did think Dan had a bit more than a tables worth there. Maybe what you can fit on and under your table only would be more fair to all. I mean it doesn't stop you getting more stuff from your car as your table gets empty ? Overall a more enjoyable night with as you say a more mixed bag of fish through than normal FJ
Munruben1
Good to see Dan got a win with the table idea even after it was posted earlier in the week by Graeme no tables. One item that can not be currently sold at the auctions is electrical items without current test & tag. To get them tagged in small quantities & the cost per item stops a lot of people from doing that. There must be a sparky as a club member that could test & tag items at auctions for nominal cost with the profit going to their club. Anyone can do just a one day course on test & tag but I think my ticket states can only do your own or employers equipment. No one is going to pay $3-$5 to get one item done if the item is say a 25watt heater that might bring $5 but a External pump etc that may bring over $100+ would be interested. Most of the Test & Tag guys that do nothing else apart from replace plugs have a flat hourly rate for small quantities. Any thoughts on this QFAS delegates. luckyfish
if it means fish aren't sitting around in bags till 2am waiting to be auctioned then dry good tables are a good idea
Fish Junkie
if it means fish aren't sitting around in bags till 2am waiting to be auctioned then dry good tables are a good idea 100% behind that. The three bag rule needs updating too. Also a limit on species say 20/25 bags with first in best dressed that way people would get there fish in early and not have them checked in as the auction is running Nothing worse than sitting through a 100 bags of same fish FJ
trk18
My first one , found it a little drawn out with all the guppies lol but was a good night either way. Not sure how the last ones have gone but the dry table seemed busy most of the night & if that makes it quicker getting the fish out & to there new homes well great. One suggestion I would make if I may, when it comes to kids I reckon they should def be allowed to come etc I have 4 my self but if there dropping a Dora toy from the balcony again & again & again for like 1-2 hours straight you may need to sell panadoll throughout the canteen lol I had a headache by the end of the night lol Enjoyed the auction for sure thanks to those who arrange it . Will be back.
Craigo
Gotta say guys. Worst auction to date. Nothing except for plants, guppies & BNS.....wow....boring Sorry for negative feedback but it was poor on fronts. even the auctioneers seem disinterested.... Good to see they have finally taken on some advice and at least trailed the dry good tables. Something needs to be done to pick up interest from the public for these events.... I wouldve come but I didn't want to bring a crying 7month old baby as I know from past auctions what a pain screaming kids can be. People who have spent their time catching and bagging their fish are going to be pissed to hear they can't even sell them, they will then need to either take their fish home then and there or when they leave at the end of the night, in essence having stressed out and bagged fish for no reason (and possibly having put them in bags as long as fish that were sold). The idea does have merit and has been considered and will continue to be thought about in other forms, but at present it does not seem in the best interest of the Auction or the Critters we love. luckyfish
perhaps....and this is only an idea....have two different times to get fish in, say people can bring fish in before 3pm like they do now, and then have people bring in fish at a later time, say 6pm, that way not as many fish a stressed out.... I don't know, it sounded better in my head lol
gingerbeer
I was there with Joel, my 9 year old. I want to say a big thankyou to the people surrounding us, including many who are on this forum. Joel had a blast doing the bidding, with some encouragement at times and was very proud of his purchases. Also many took the time to allow him to have a look at there purchases. It all helped make a special night for him and encourage him. Thankyou! In terms of variety, whilst there was a lot of guppys - we got a couple of bags.... There was also a lot of other stuff. A very nice trio of Apisto. hongsloi was picked up in the back row where I was, a brilliant big pair of oscars (Joel wanted to bid on those and was very impressed that the purchaser stopped to show him), possibly the most undertalked up fish of the night was the pair of Juli. ****feldi - huge fish. Brengun
I met heaps more people and got reaquainted with the ones I already knew. Such a variety of different people having all different sorts of fishes. It was a bit warm in the hall and many times I popped outside for a few minutes away from the blaring auction speakers so I got no headaches at all. Talked my head off to people outside while I was out there though lol. I liked Dans table as I could look and read up on lots of stuff at my leasure which I don't normally get time to do as much at a lfs. At the very end of the night, I think some of Dans stuff was taken up and auctioned on stage so if the stall wasn't a success, at least Dan was able to get a bit of money for some stuff that way. Dan even fixed my dodgy sore back for me for free, so I could stand longer and look at all the stuff on his stall. There's a method to his madness lol. Many times I was tempted to buy auction stuff but someone always outbid me so I consoled myself by buying some fish bags from Dan at his stall. Congrats to bristlenose John on his purchases and condolences to those he outbid. When the man wants something special he really wants it lol. I have been to every spring hill auction for a couple years now and you can never tell whats going to be there. I have seen a night of duckweed till it was coming out our ears and nights when there was barely a packet there. Nights when it was a bristenose fest and last night was there even a pep or a longfin bn in it at all? Nights of heaps of blue dolphins and nights like last night when there there was barely one. Electric yellows were pretty sparse this time too and I don't think I saw even one frontosa offered? Thats the nature of the auctions, you just never know whats going to pop up. Lots of it lol. For the parents of the kids running around that had the net fall down on them. Glad to see they didnt get hurt! It scared the **** out of me to be honest. Though it is very hard to make changes that are fair to all sellers and buyers, but it is something that is constantly being thought about. People using their "connections" (though friends), or their partner/spouse to put in multiple items under different names is also my pet hate. Unfortunately it's impossible to prove that the fish one person enters are actually someone else's. I wish their was a way to stop this from happening, I dislike the little guys, the ones who only have a few fish to sell, suffering at the hands of people who do seem to do it as commercial practice and have huge quantities to move. I think that if it was to be stopped and the numbers of common items limited the auction would be a lot quicker and a lot more enjoyable for everyone. I think while buyers are focused, happy and attentive they are more likely to buy then when they are bored, frustrated and/or half asleep. The problem is finding a way of doing so that is fair to everyone.

z240
I had Amy my Ten year old with me last night & she had a great time, I actually remember when she would have been running around with the kids dropping Elmo over the edge! Thankful she is now a keen fish hobbyist in the making (Thank you to a few members for their support of Amy's quest the mini tanks, fish, books, dry goods) She would turn her bedroom in to a fish room if she could. Bring on the solar panels (Thanks Craigo-great idea on am looking into it). Amy stuck through to 10.45pm, bids well, asked questions, did my win at the table payment & collecting plus she got some great fish. I personally like the dry goods through auction as prices where probably better than if on a table, but I reason sellers could negotiate. Even Amy wondered who had been breeding all the guppies, look out the next Action will be different again, but I hope I can pick up some more slate only got one piece & missed the next lot (No one saw my hand!)
