drmunroe
so when ever i do a water change all i add to the water now days is water conditioner & a teaspoon of salt for every 10L. My fish seem to be doing well & my levels always seem to be fine. Does anyone see an advantage to use conditioning salts for tropical tanks? If so why? & what product do you use? cheers
liljohn_83
all conditioning salts ,,if they are the real deal are cientificly formulated , and will benifit /help replicate the specific water requierments ,for diferent speacies ie tropical /tang/malwa /livebearer but it's your own choice depends how close you wanto get ,only realy important for say wild caught fish , as mots of what you generally buy in a shop are breed in water /prime and plain old salt the same could be said for co2 or just fertiliser thats about my opinion on it

gingerbeer
The answer really depends upon what fish - what species are we talking about to enable us to give a better answer?
drmunroe
The answer really depends upon what fish - what species are we talking about to enable us to give a better answer? well my main fish are 4 x large snake skin gouramis. Ive had them for over 3yrs now & they're all well past 10cms. They all seem happy & I've got plenty of filtration. As i said, when i do a water change all i use is API Stress Coat+ (10ml p/38L for slime coat as well), & sea salt. I used to use API stress Zyme for bacteria replacement but I havent used it for a couple of months & as I said, my levels are good & my fish are happy & healthy (or at least appear to be)... I also have 2 x large angels (koi & golden marble), 3 x siamese flying foxes, & a sail fin pleco. Just wondering if there really is a point to adding more stuff to the water? gingerbeer
OK - so first of all, your gourami, plecos, SAE's and angels will prefer slightly soft and acidic water. I am assuming you are using town water. The API Stress Coat+ is essential to remove the chloramines added to your water. Alternatives that do the same thing are Seachem Prime, or GLJ product Supachlor. The addition of salt I would personally skip. The reason being that it is not neccessary. The API Stress Zyme again if you have healthy maintained filters is probably doing very little. Remember to clean your filters in water from your fish tank to avoid poisening the bacteria and all should be well. HTH Steve
