watsy
im going with the panel on the left. the one on the right was the one i had dummy fitted. the difference between the two is the left peice is 19mm solid timber the other is just 12mm V.J. lining board. i want a more solid look top and bottom shelf door frames are done. very basic look but should look very effective once fitted braces, door supports and top skirt all in place. its all coming together now

JayPee
Nice looking build mate. Come together nicely. Definatly nice and solid. When i build any thing out of pine and I plan on staining it, I use the same colour putty as the finished colour. Only because the stain doesn't take to the putty the same as timber and sometimes stands out real bad. But all in all it looks bloody great. Very nice design. =)
watsy
Thanks heaps JAYPEE!! I make furniture for a living and i couldn't agree with you more on using the same colour putty as the stain.. The only thing is this stand only cost me $100 to make and i got to have the factory all to myself yesterday arvo and this morning for joining doors, ripping panels ect (the stand was assembeled at home)... my boss ordered more dark putty but wont be in till next week and there was no way i was gonna go buy a little tub of timbermate from bunnings (about $15 for a small tub) when i can pine colour for free..lol. the stand will be chocolate but i have every intention of going over the putty with a fine brush and stain to darken the putty up before i spray at home tomorrow.. Thanks for the comments mate. Graham Thanks for the comments Mike Edited March 17, 2012 by watsy

watsy
I really cant say enough about this B/G. the detail is amazing!! was purchased it from aquaria australia warehouse. fast dispatch and well packed. couldn't be happier.
JayPee
Hey Mike. Yeah i done 5 years of making pine furniture. Now have a decent work shop out the back for this sort of stuff. Lets say i needed to get 3 phase put on to run it. If i every run out of coloured putty i just use the pine colour but mix some stain in with it. Enough timber talk now that back groung is bloody spectacular. Which way are you putting it ?? The narrow bit at the top ?? Or the narrow bit at the bottom to make it look like it has some rocky overhangs ?? Can't wait to see it in the tank. How's the stand going ?? =)
watsy
I knew you must have had some background in the trade.. as a fellow wood worker to another we both know what they charge for a basic stand let alone a 6x2 cabinet is robbery. on another note, I would turn the B/G the way you said so its like overhanging rocks but it just looks to hard to secure that way. I'll probly have a fish jump behind the B/G....lol. and the stand is on hold for the time being. its all built, but my missus is pregnat and feeling rather sick at the moment so i have to put of staining for now the smell travels through the whole house (no booth here). i'll probly have it all done by friday night while she is at work. I just hope the rain and humiditty holds off when it comes time for the clear. I'll probly have to get some retarder from work. Thanks for the comments mate. I'll post pics when more is done Hey JayPee, i just noticed you called me Mike,...lol.... My name is Graham.. All good J.P. watsy
Ok guys, so i have made some progress on the stand. because of this rain i've had time to think about some stuff and how to execute it without to much trouble. ok, so first came the staining. first coat http: now to seal the tank stand, the reason why it looks cloudy is because once you seal you then have to rub it back to get the smooth finish. watsy
now to the fun part. this is the topcoat stage. i used 100% for the finish. this is what i had time to think about. i was getting tired of going all the way back to the old 6x2 stand reaching for food or chemicals. i made a false back and with the extra ends i had made up i used them to make the sides od the inside box.. i cut some 5mm glass for the shelves and also made them adjustable. i think it came off rather nicely
watsy
i prefer this look but with alittle one on the way i think its best if i put a door on it. i was going to put frosted glass for the middle door but in all honesty, i really cant be bothered...lol
JayPee
Looks bloody good mate. 100% hey you must like shinny things i use 60 %. Love the middle section section with the glass shelves. Great job mate. =)

JayPee
No probs mate. Credit paid where credit is due. (is that how it goes) The only thing i would of done different is , I would of made the doors fit between the legs. But that comes back to personal preference. Can't wait to see the tank on it and the hood done. What is going in the tank or are you still deciding ?? =)
watsy
thanks jaypee, yea i didnt wanna go to to much trouble with this stand.. the only reason why i build the thing was because my orignal stand didnt fit my new eheim 2260.. and since the tank has to be emptied i thought id put a new b/g in it. as for whats giong in it is my americans. but yea the hood should not be to far off. i have never had a colonial style so im kinda leaning towards that.
