Hello just recently purchased a mangrove jack around 25cm. Just wondering if there is a good website or post relating to mangrove jack care or if somebody on here can give me a few tips. The jack is very shy at the moment i put a few frozen prawns in and he wouldn't touch them i left the room about 20 minutes later they were gone. Currently in a 6x2x2 with a piece of driftwood and a few rocks.

Thanks, Punter.

Hmm, the guy i got him off said he had him since a fingerling, he's not overly shy just wouldn't eat while i was watching him. He also isn't showing much colour mostly silver with a hint of red. I did try some hikari carnivore pellets but they didn't get eaten so i took them out.

Given that a significant number of large Barra recently took the opportunity to head for the salt it is most likely that all of the Jacks with their lifecycle and preference of habitat would have done the same.

i think a small percentage of fish may hav takin the leap for freedom but my point being there are some large healthy jack in there that are not in salt water i think fresh food is way more important then salt for a healthy jack and packet bait isnt fresh.

Captive bred Jacks and their stocking in impoundments ? might be able to help there , first Jacks cultured and stocked in an impoundment were in December 1998 with 2655 with a mean length of 27.5mm stocked into Lake Morris an impoundment closed to fishing. This was followed by 1325 fish with a mean length of 86.5mm in June 1999. Lake Tinaroo was next with 181 fingerlings in 1999/2000 and 4297 in 2001/2002 of interest here were 2 of the original stocking captured in 2002 @35cm. Awoonga was first stocked in 2000/2001 with 180 fish then 4013 fish in 2001/2002 first recapture in 2003 largest fish recorded recaptured 69 cm I think. The current Awoonga fishery manager/ GAWB hatchery manager is a member of this forum and would be the best person for any further info on Awoonga and cultured Jacks as for some time has been the only person producing them.

For anyone considering catching their own Mangrove jack, be aware that they are a sport fish with size and bag limits.

The minimum legal size is 35cm, and you can keep a maximum of 5.

Alive or dead doesn't make a difference.

If you catch a small one (less than 35cm) and think "this will look nice in my tank", be aware that you are breaking the law if you keep it.
