substrate for africans.

Recommended Posts

Setting up my 5 ft and was wondering what would be the best substrate for not too large cichlids like flameback, acei and the sort. Would like something nice to look at as this will be my display tank, loved the look of the substrate in japes' setups would that be suitable?

hey mate,

Yes calcium carb gravel is one of the best for africans, it keep up a higher Ph which is more suitible for africans. i have a 5ft filled with it for my africans and they are very happy in it :), the only thing is that if there is too much light it will cause a algae growth on the gravel and is hard to remove.

hey,

the sand that japes is using in his tank is neutral so it wont buffer your water like the cal.carb would.... an even better option but a little more expensive would be crushed coral, it lasts alot longer than the cal carb and wont stop buffering .

you could always use sand and put some coral in your filter or sump like that if you wanted to do it that way...
