CrayonBox
Hey guys, the other day i bought a robinstoni and put it in my 8ft tank (it was the same size as almost all of the fish) but today i came home and he had a split tail and dorsal fin. So how do i treat this?
liljohn_83
''add some melafix if your worryd abot secondary infection'' , or just keep up the water changes and leave it allone
Yodapwnsasmurf
Do you mean a 'Robertsoni'? I'd just add a little salt, some splits never heal up though, it's strange...

Yodapwnsasmurf
A handfull or two, can't really dose too much unless you go crazy with it.... All my tanks always have a little salt in them, just to keep them free of white spot etc...

Yodapwnsasmurf
i'd say the salt just got filtered out i'll put a bit more in The salt has not got filtered out, once it's dissolved it'll stay in the tank in some form until you change the water, it doesn't evaporate either so no need to top it up with water top ups.. I hope you are not using ordinary table salt. Need to use an aquarium salt. That's debatable, I have only ever used plain, run of the mill table salt, with Iodine added. Iodine has never harmed my fish and it's sometimes said to actually be beneficial.
tuffy_rana
use salt........ none iodized. does not need to be "aquarium salt" ......." pool salt" will do if its 100% salt. iodine will do damage to gills over time. as for whitespot " a handfull of salt" wont kill ich. it needs to be in the range of 2.5-3 grams a litre before it affects the ich's ability to split. a handfull........ in what sized tank ?????????????? "oh i just got a bottle of rapid whitespot remedy......... a good ol squirt will do hey?" ...................nup....... aint the case. allways be wary of the spp. you are treating and i use good ol pool salt. sunray by cheetham. just 100% salt and 7 bux for 20kg HTH

tuffy_rana
And do you use it in ur tanks all the time or just as a cure? either or. remember they are freshwater fish. that being said even our native spp. have to deal with rising salinity in certain areas of australia. i use salt regulary but dont always replace it at water change. i find myself doing 3-4 water changes and then redosing 1gram per litre of salt as a general tonic. many trains of thought on the good and bad aspects of dosing salt but it works for me so i continue to do it. as i stated my tanks are not allways salted but do get regular "treatments" HTH
