What to put in a 2ft that eats fry

Recommended Posts

After seeing the "New fry culling machine" thread it got me thinking.

Is it possible to get something that will eat fry (guppy, cherry and possibly bn) that fits into a 2ft tank?

I've got a spare one and don't have any room for a bigger tank.

I was hoping for 2-3 fish, but a single fish is fine. I was also considering something like a cray but didn't think it would be able to get the guppy fry.

I'm hoping for something that looks nice and is easy to look after.

I think it sounds like i'm asking for allot but i figure the more i detail the easier it might be for advice.

Thanks

Firstly thanks for all your replies. I've been reading and googling after each one.

The other thing i forgot to mention is it would need to be able to handle other food (pelets etc) if i don't have enough in the tank to feed them. It looks like it's going to be interesting to get something to fit.

Some adult rainbow fish will definitely eat guppy and cherry shrimp but not so sure about the BN

From the googling i did, it looks like they would fit into the tanks with some of the smaller species

A breeding pair of blue acaras, they would do well cos they are very aggresive when breeding and they breed like once a week and they dont get too big.

The problem is i would need something to the take care of them after they breed

Bullrout....

Would love to, but i saw one on here a while ago and got keen but it would outgrow the 2ft tank and if i move it into my 4ft i'd have no fish left lol.

Couple of purple spot gudgeons even....

From the googling it looks like they get up to 10-15 cm's, could work but wonder if that's too big for a 2ft.

Would a 6cm Jag work? They get really aggressive but might grow to fast....

It would outgrow the tank pretty easy i think.

mouth almighty. They dont have the name for nothing.

did a google and looks like a nice fish, is it related to the bara? It gets up to 18cm so would most likely out grow it.

Red devil would probably be ok. We had one years ago, fiesty as in his 2ft

They need 200L's and get up to 14 inches though.

It would take. Bullrout about 10 years to outgrow a 2 footer plus they don't do anything... Head out to colleges crossing with a cast net, you will find them. Oh and another bonus is they don't need heating through winter

Awesome! I think i'll have room for another tank in 10 years.

I'm sure they are out there, but would it be possible to catch one or would i need to be lucky?

Bullrout are VERY hard to get to eat pellets, I have never been able to do it.

Go down to a small creek during the day, lift some smallish rocks and quickly scoop the entire contents of under the rock up with the net.

You should have some nice shrimp and probably some eels, if you get lucky, you'll have a Bullrout.

Or, at night, just go down with a torch, there are plenty of the beasts around, you just gotta find em.

Also, I don't know how legal these methods are in QLD.......

i did a tank clean and removed all my driftwood with plants and man do those shrimp multiply!

so I've got plenty to start feeding a bullrout. thinking long term, how many shrimp/baby guppies would i need to supply daily for feeding and would a 4ft planted tank be enough for a long term supply?

i saw an empty crab tank at pc and thought they would be cool also. im guessing the answer to the "will they go together" question is as long as it doesn't fit in its mouth.

If you mean colleges crossing brisbane then it's freshwater and a reserve so a cast net would be illegal.
