Help help help....just lost about 10 well established africans today

Recommended Posts

Man is this a depressing post to write put with the experience in this forum... maybe some answers for what has just happened

Firstly the details of the tank

4ft x 15 x 18 going for over 12mths...new filter eheim 2217 bought as xmas gift fully cycled never had any issues with it...run it with 2 bags of perigan and matrix carbon added...Over the time added different fish..only had i issue with a very battered albino peacock...and a random sexificatus death...2 months ago added powerhead to help with pushing stuff around so filter can work

as of this morning 10.30am the tank had

1 x 20cm Venustus now gone

1x 15cm Rostratus ditto

1x 15 cm Protomelus Steveni

1x 10 cm eureka red..nice nice fish

1x 12cm red empress ..now gone

1x6 cm Neolamprologus tretocephalus) now gone

1x 12cm Kandango Red...gone

1x 10cm Kandango blue..also gone

These are the survivors

1xred empress

1 mgaino

2 x hongi

1 x aurutus

1x blue peacock

1x tangerine peacock..this is my second favourite looking fish..thank DDF aka donny

1x electric blue

1x electric yellow

1x electric yellow cross with something...sold to me incorrectly as a peacock

given that i cleaned the main filter was six weeks ago this was the 3rd major clean ...last weekly water change was 6 days ago with water parameters check 2 days ago 8.0 ph

0 ammo 0nitrite 10-20 ppm nitrates ..maybe once in while 2-3 weeks add stability or bio aid as a precaution...

got the emergency phone call at work ....came home did a water test 8.0 ph ammo 1ppm nitrites 5ppm nitrates 20ppm...attributed this to the deaths...did water change ...all now at 0 have been for over an hour...

What has done this ....have these fish been electrocuted or another problem i should was for...

Any ideas would be helped...

Currently morning with a couple of drinks

thanks for quick replies...no sprays used at all...closed lids..

water temp 26.8

also i should add....feed has been variety of spectrum bloodworms and range of frozen mainly malawi mix from ocean nutrition...

so good diet according to LFS

sounds to me like the cannister was not running for a few hours or even over night....... and was then plugged back in.

weird conspiracy theory, but that would produce ammonia and nitrite......

I think the thory of ammonia and nitrite coming from lost fish is more likely tho

donny sure does suck......

I guess this is also weird......you started my african journey over 18mths ago ....and those fish are all alive...including your tangerine ..really good looking fish...

All the rings in bought from Aquarium Warehouse and others are now gone ..funny enough i am leaning towards my electrocution theory from the cheap powerhead i bought them ...i guess a hard lesson learnt

RIP

I didn't think fish could get electrocuted from faulty wiring in the tank?

I put a second hand wave maker in one of my tanks not long ago and when I went to clean the tank I put my hand in the water and oh boy did I get a huge hit my arm ached for the next day turns out there was bare wires coming out of the wave maker but it never affected the fish they were in all fine it was in there for days before that happened to me

It didn't affect the fish cause there was no earth for them? Was my theory anyway..

they cant be electrocuted unless they come in direct contact with live electrical parts.

your theory on the fish not getting a zap is partially correct too, you got a shock because of a difference in potential voltages - IE tanks at 230vAC and your at 0vAC, because the fish they where at the same potential voltage as the water in the tank they wouldnt have recieved a shock.

@drarcon - i doubt its from electrocution, i'm with DFF on this ,maybe somehow your filters been switched off, maybe you lost power, mini cycle perhaps, who knows, but the presence of amm and nitrite indicateds your filter isnt fully cycled or cant keep up with the bioload

....thanks Ray.

Electrical current in the water would need a conduit to earth, so unless you got zapped when you touched it, it wasn't that.

Any chance the power went out at any stage? Even if it did, that many deaths from morning to afternoon is odd.

Hi Drarcon

As per above posts, its a weird one. Im just wondering if you got some sort of strange parasite.

I had dramas with my display a while back, turned out to be Trichodina, basically, something that can only be diagnosed by a vet.

3 month long thread here, may help. http://www.qldaf.com/forums/diseases-fish-care-water-discussion-12/persistent-parasite-49843/

Its just a stab in the dark, but may be of some help, hope you sort it out, good luck.

Brendan

as much as your fish will love bloodworm and it seems to be a favoured food, you may find this was a contributing factor in the fishes "mystery" deaths, mbuna do not do well at all with bloodworm, and as stated thats was a very random stocking list in a small tank, so possibly an internal parasite, bloat, stress many factors in there to look at,,,,,

.....thanks goneself :)

Hey GONESELF...no didn't get shock from anything because anything in contact with water was switched off before the distressing haul....

i can't believe that a amazing parasite could activate itself on 8 fish in a 5 hour period...a time activated parasite ..although i do watch HOUSE occasionally and it happens...hehe

everyone here is meaning very well..and the information is very much appreciated..

so thank you all

bloodworm dead can shoot your nitrate over the moon you have a carbon bag in your filter it will overload enough to change every twoo weeks from feeding and overstock of fish by the sound of it , my addvice remove carbon bag from canester replace with shell grit hang your carbon bag in the back somwere replace bag every 2 weeks hand in the sun to dry and you can use it again over and over ,charcol can only absorb so much nitrate to absorb moer nitrate it releases a different gas that will push you nitrate & amonia over the top very heavy aeration will also evartorate nitrate hope this helps and sorry you had this happent

whilst house is a great show and yes i do not believe you had a super parasite worthy of a place in his show, take a look at bloodworm under the microscope, i would never feed my fish it, its like russian roulette, and as wolfgang has stated left uneaten or dead it can be toxic, as previously stated the mix of fish you have in a small tank was always going to lead to fights n stress, you have or had some very aggressive fish in there very capable of making life difficult and if they were stressed wiping out a few very quickly, there are many syphtoms of stress

i hope all goes well

as well as not liking bloodworm, carbon is also a evil u can do well without :)

best of luck,

will keep my eyes peeled out for a house episode soon :)

You tank has began to cycle over again for some reason and your fish have died from Nitrite poisoning.

Their gills and blood will probably have a brownish look to them.

Water changes will help and only salt can have a chance at reversing the Nitrite poisoning if any other fish are affected.

5 times the does in salt to the level of Nitrites can have a reversing effect on the poisoning.

Unfortunately the level of salt often needed can knock the fish off anyway so its a gamble you sometimes have to take.
