Mixing Americans and Dwarfes?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how this is going to go? i have a 5ft fish tank that i was thinking of having dwarfs in but i still like to have my big americans even if its only 2 or 3. So if i put them all together is this going to end badly or will it be alright? I was thinking as long as i keep to low aggression lvls it might alright but again i'm not really sure

well i have an 8ft display american tank but i am missing some americans. So a festae comes to mind, but if there going to eat my dwarfs then i might go for more palcid ones like maybe a roberstoni

So if you can't keep an 14" predator, you will drop to a 10" predator?

Dwarfs are not a fish to mix with these big predators. I have even had geos eat dwarfs. The rule of the jungle is if you can fit in my mouth, I may eat you.

Suitable tank mates for dwarfs are angels, festivum.

The common definition of a dwarf cichlid is a cichlid under 10cm. This is in amercian terms Apistogramma, Nanacara, etc. Not geos.

Maybe you need to be more specific in your question. What fish do you currently have?

At the moment the 5ft is bone dry. I havent got any fish for it yet (i like to suport my LFS and grow them up from small) i wanted to see how they would go maybe i can just with nomarl americans just go for different ones.

The 8ft has; texas, gold severum, gold rivulatus, jack dempsey, tiger oscar, red devil (temp), roberstoni, firemouth, festervum, silver dollar. pretty sure thats about it

I rekon you either gotta chose between a large american tank or a dwarf tank. Theres no point in going out and buying dwarfs cos they will just become live food.

I dont just want to buy fish if they are going to be killed.

thats just a risk you take putting americans together, even breeding pairs can and will kill each other, there are some that would be less likely to kill each other, but always the risk,

yeh i know theres always a risk when putting any fish together especially those big americans but i dont want to make some kind of silly mistake were there was never any chance they would live together

whilst yes polleni are madagaskan........... they are more often then not kept in american tanks due to a few factors. they smash africans, are found in anything from alkaline to acidic blackwater (perfect for amercan tanks) and look cool in american tanks. haitian cichlids are not here though i have heard reports of honduran reds in my travels :)

firstly, some geos get to 25cm+, so not a dwarf. They will eat dwarves like apistos. If you want dwarves, then you would be better going with a planted discus/angel tank and imo would look much cooler :)

a good choice for a geo with some dwarfs would be red humps, with caution

whilst a smallish spp. 6" odd......... mine (males) are quite violent towards each other and other fish

Yeah sorry guys, I was copying lists from a few different places and was removing stuff I wasn't sure existed in Australia, must have missed out haiti. :P I have definitely not seen a haiti ever, don't even know what that is.

Didn't know polleni was madagascan, no wonder i never saw them in american profiles. XD But yeah they can be kept with americans anyways.

I have a pair of Honduran Red Points actually. At least, it was sold to me as such, and from pics of 'em I posted in various forums they were identified as HRPs as well. :P If they do turn out to be normal convicts then nvm. Xd

What's a midevil cichlid? Mine are mostly fullevil.

Mixing dwarfs and mid-large size yanks is just a bad idea, even if they don't get eaten they'll live in fear and constant stress, and you'll never see them at their best.
