Happened to be driving past Aquariums in Paradise at Ashmore , thought they had shut up completly , but have a sign out front

All stock must go by 30/5 so make an offer , they said more ya buy cheaper it gets

Didn't really look at prices of tanks as i have enough at moment

But they still had a fair few tanks / gravel / heaters/ and heap of other gear + some fishes

I picked up 2 beautiful little Bream for bugger all and a wicked big golden vine driftwood piece prob close to 5 ft for 20 bucks bargain

Just thought id share if any one is after anything

Isn't that place in taree st at burleigh still there?

Was originally only a marine specialist shop but then opened up upstairs with freshwater livestock, or did they drop off the map too?

Yes Sebastion is still at Burleigh, nice little store.

Sad days for the coast, I remember 15 yrs ago when we had 3 stores alone at Southport, one at Runaway Bay, Mermaid Beach where the old cinema was another on the highway, Aquarium alive at Nerang, Bernies and I'm sure a couple of others. Use to make a day of it!

Big loss when Mick and Leanne shut up shop. Also does anyone know if Mick is still making tanks?

I don't remember this many shops going under in SE QLD in the 1990-91 recession, can we really blame all of this on the internet ? Is the same problem happening in Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide ( I know there are plenty of shops in Adelaide) are there shops closing down there as well ?

Who is saying that? All you hear is mining boom. But some sectors there are capping their price. May be levelling out in parts. News today mentioned Spain(4th largest Europe) has gone into recession. & the anticipated bounce back from the States isn't at what was planned/hoped.

Retail full stop is struggling. Retravision(south) looks like it will go under. Is that the third established Electrical Chain?

It is just so costly to make a living. People aren't spending like they used to. Its more than just the internet. There are more pet super stores too.

When you think to the list earlier, there was also a lfs at Tugun & Fab Fish. Gone from what some said to many, to next to none. Wow, I remember the Mermaid Beach one. Old dude with his little dog & had the young fella helper.

French :)

You hear it all the time on the news and in the papers and various news websites. Especially flowing from Gillard and Swannie's mouths. Have a look in the paper next time at the amount of company's being wound up or going into Administration or liquidation, quite scary, not to mention falling real estate prices.

Just quickly, both parties are to blame for the mess currently economically. Labour should be spending more again on infrastructure to spark things along again & encourage spending. Yet Liberal keep talking up how important a surplus is. So Labour are trying to prove them wrong. Cause a labour gov can never balance a budget. But they will be kicked out next election anyway lol. Retards!

Aquariums in paradise is just about empty - virtually no fish left.

They have some 4ftx16x16 shop used tanks still for sale ($80 each - not exactly a bargain, but a bit of haggling may get that down) though and some eheim pickups, lots of rocks and a bit of wood.

Things is, in this day and age you can't just have an aquarium shop selling run of the mill fish tucked away in an industrial shed and expect it to do well.

Its all moving to an on-line presence and 'branding', unless you offer rare/unusual/imports or get known for something in particular, or have a high turnaround of products.

You can bag the chain stores all you like, but they are developing that brand, and also sell other lines (dog etc) so they are somewhat diversified - which is important when people who aren't in mining or associated industries have less $ to spend.

In reality, some aquarium shops are any better then the chain stores some of which aren't too bad at all.

Wetpetz was known for the rare, online information sharing & its website was where I first looked for information on fish species etc. Was based in a popular Garden Centre too.

I remember G&S tried a few avenues. ie; Discus Specialist

Fab Fish was known for its Americans.

Aquarium Warehouse, getting their own fish imported & going cheap. Sthpt store is no longer

Aquarium Petland had a diverse range of Cichlids & had great tanks for a good price. (Word of mouth should of been enough for them to keep going)

Aquariums Alive has added Marines & dry good food for Cats & Dogs

I think you will find dry good selling online is a way to go. LFS could venture into that, importing a container load & storage is then a must.

You can look here for a rough idea of the costs of an LFS

I think every industry outside of Mining is fighting very hard for every dollar. Look at Master Traders in my industry. They are selling some lines to retail customers cheaper than us as a chain can buy it for! Just as well sparkies need to have an account & we are so good at customer service lol

ps; Sure big chain stores or pet barns etc may draw away from others... But I know when Brad was running Aquariums Alive. He got a lot of customers from a certain store. Cuts both ways.

Sometimes its just focus on yourself, do what you do well. It is all you can control in the long run.
