Hey guys, not sure if anyone can help but just feel like blabbing

I have an American/ Aussie display and an African display. And I feel like the Africans are starting to bore me. They just don't seem to have as much personality as my Americans. I just get more joy out of my Americans than I do the Africans. So I'm not sure whether to sell the Africans and do another American display, set up an American breeding pair in the tank or maybe move to tangs.

Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. Even similar experiences. I mean I like my africans but yeah. Maybe I'll feel differently about them after I now them into their new tank and do a re scape.

Thoughts?

Easy :)

Get some tangs, that's probably why you feel that way

Malawis are soooo boring, just swim from one side of the tank to the other lol

Tangs have personalities and still go well in large species groups (where as I see most americans have personalities, but you can only have one of that particular species in a tank with other species)

Try watching some videos as well, that'll give you a bit more of a sense of the fish

Tangs are at their best when breeding and having a mix of fish which can co-exist and still breed while being together means that you'll have different groups showing off at different times

They might not be so colourful 24/7 but when they do colour up every now and again you'll be amazed be always be on the look out to see them colour like that again

I had the same experience. I've always had natives and not too long ago I had malawis too. But I found they were boring too. I sold them off and got my breeding pairs of Americans. I'm pretty happy with my native and American tanks atm. I'm thinking of moving on a pair of Gold Saums though to make way for jags. But you can't go wrong with Americans...until they kill eachother haha

I'm a big fan of, if you don't love em don't keep em! I figure they won't get the attention to detail fish need if you don't feel the passion for them..

but if you give them the attention to detail you will likely get the passion for them. It works both ways.

Just my opinion, but i think sometimes people move their fish on too quickly. Im bored of this today - what else could I get..???

Not saying this you samo, just what I see appear and then re-appear in FS threads.

be patient, take your time, watch your fish.

I have africans & americans. My enthusiasm will shift in cycles but it always returns for both.

Same with fishkeeping in general too.

IMO only keep what really makes you go wow. Keeping for the sake of it drove me to sell 90% of my stock. Now I only keep the really special stuff and am much better off for it. Decide what are your dream fish, and aim for that.

Do whatever you want, nobody's opinion is as good as your own And at the end of the day you look at the tank. People will always say you need to keep this or you need to do things a certain way. Look online, go to underwater world, go skin diving in a freshwater creek. Very few hobbyists will stick to a certain species or type of set up before keeping many different set ups and species of fish.

Haha man they are pretty cool.

Ok well at this point I'm definately getting rid of the malawis. Still unsure as whether to do an American, Aussie or tang tank. The mrs really wants to keep our black calvus who would for right in with tangs. I also have 5 tanganikan catfish so yeah. Still have no idea really but some of the comments above are spot on. I don't have the attention to detail for my Africans that I used to have. So definately time for a change. I've always had a fascination for tangs so that may be the way to go. May have to see what shon has in the way of fry.

The space in my lounge room where this tank is going isn't all that big. Thinking a 4x2x2 is as big as I could go. Reckon thatd be big enough for any of the ideas I have?

mate, IMO, going from malawis to tangs aint that much different. Shon will tell you otherwise :P , but thats just my 2c.

Different species yes I'll grant you that, so you do have some more options, but malawi's can do it just as good :)

If you want a real change, go a planted tank - c02 the real deal, or maybe some apistos, or some bettas.

or if its your thing a quality flowerhorn.

I'm having the same dilemma atm

I've got a 4ft with a single f pep bn. I'm thinking of going south americans as i'm planning on using straight rain water to keep the water changes simple. Geophagus sp. "Tapajos Orange Head", Satanoperca leucosticta, or maybe discus....

i'll be watching this thread for any other ideas :)

I agree they are the way, thats why my garage is full of them and always will be :D

but i'd like to have a bit of greenery in my display, i'm just worried that geo's or discus could be a bit boring to watch... prove me wrong people :)

I just sold all my peacocks and have started a tang tank and absolutely love it. Peacocks just fight and chase each other around whereas tangs are cheeky and love to watch you watching them. I have 1 Calvus, 1 Transcriptus & bought 2 pair sunspot Brevis (although scored another pair which must have been hiding in the shell) and they all have different natures. Just can't wait to get some Leptos or Nigripinnis to finish it off. Only down fall is they are hard to get unlike peacocks etc which are easily accessible but I think it's worth the wait. Good luck with whichever way you go.

Ok guys,

So after a lot of thought and a little heart ache I'm thinking I'll get rid of my malawi display along with the 3ft tank and split my Aussie American display. But not in the way you might think, instead of splitting straight aussies in one tank and americans in another I'll be splitting them according to size and aggression levels. So here's the lists, feel free to re arrange, add, subtract or just advice in general.

Tank 1: 5x2x2 (big fish tank)

1 x Jag

2 x Rivulautus (white and green)

2 x salmon tails

2 x plecos (maybe)

Tank 2: 5x15x2 (eventually 4 or 5 x 18 or 2)

1 x super green texas

1 x SPJD

1 x Firemouth

1 x pink Firemouth (don't know whether I'll keep him)

1 x purple spotted gudgoen (would like another)

1 x spotted raph cat

2 x feather fin cats

Ok so there the lists, Suggestions Go!
