goneself
Anybody here have any success with a RD with other fish long term? I have a new 8x3 coming soon which will be my main display tank..I'd love to have a RD in there, but not all alone. I've seen it done, but never with a full grown devil, only sub adults...so, is it doable?
Matmatmat
Yeah mate it is doable:) the best way is to get a small one and grow it up with the fish it'll be living with.. And keep your fingers crossed you didn't get a really cranky one! HTH
Qwerty
I have had luck with keeping females in community tank in the past.
Otto
Size of the tank is important. Huge red devils in this tank. They bred as well a few times. :-)
steve6610
clayton31 had one in his 8x2x2 with several other large americans, i think it was a f/m, but they got on great,
mines bigger
i have one in my community tank with dovii, brazilliensis and firemouths and they went fine until i moved them into a tub so i could set up the new tank.... the firemouths have copped it, but they are the smallest fish
joller
they mainly go sour in small spaces
goneself
Yeah, I did see claytons tank..so the consensus is to go with a female? That would mean avoiding mixing in anything it would breed with..
joller
what are you stocking ideas at the moment?
goneself
Devil, trimac, some expendable dithers (probably silver dollars or BA tetras) , some target cichlids (cons), raph cats on cleanup..couple spots open for another big hitter or two. dave
I actually had a breeding pair in my large american community 7x3x2 Never any issues with other tank mates. Dave
goneself
Cheers Dave, yeah it's a funny one...of all the big boys, I've heard the most horror stories about devils, mostly flipping out as adults and being sectioned off. Looks like I'll be giving it a shot, though.
Glen
I have a 8 x 2 x 2 tank with a 30 cm male devil, tank mates are blackbelt, jag, jack dempsey, trimac, synspillum, texas and firemouth he is the largest fish and very chilled out dosn't go out of his way to bother any one. The only fish I've had to move out was my foot long trimac he had a real dislike for the red devil. So I think it is the luck of the draw some times. dave
Remember every fish has it's own personality when it comes to americans, It may even be trial and error to get the right fish so be prepared to swap troublemakers out when necessary, otherwise good luck !!
