OzShrimp
Hey Guys, I currently have 4 black ranchus and 2 white/orange ranchus which arent show grade but myself and fiancee love the way they shuffle when they swim however i have a few questions. We currently feed them hikari lion head pellets and occasionally some cooked peas but was wondering if theres anything else we should feed them to support their growth? In regards to the 2 white ranchus we have have they dont appear to have the same sort of head as the black ones more of a pointy like type and was wondering whether this is normal? Lastly i was curious as to what color varieties we have in Aus as i recently painstakingly tried to locate an all white ranchu without much luck but am also really wanting to get a lemonhead ranchu but cant find any of them either . Thanks, OzShrimp
goldenswimmers
Hi Ozshrimp...hows things....always nice to hear from a fellow goldfish keeper... the hikari lionhead and cooked peas is a pretty decent diet...and I think if you wanted to increase growth....you could also look at some more natural sources...looking at some more natural food sources(as natural as can be...based on what a wild goldfish would eat anyways) such as mosquito larvae, bloodworms and then duckweed for extra greens in the diet...duckweed is a winner because it is a permanenet food supply that doesnt pollute your water and can be eaten as the goldifish feel like a bite... I also mix in some high grade flakes as something different(give them a break from pellets)too... The difference in head shape would be genetic I'd imagine....hard to really comment without seeing some pics(feel free to chuck some up ) And just to talk about colours available...you can get most colour types...only types I haven't seen in shops are blue ranchus, panda ranchus and stable black and orange or "tiger" ranchu are also another one I dont recall seeing or rarely...we get calico(rare to get all the correct colours though and they are usually just white black and orange)..we get red and whites, standard red or orange guys...you can definitely get all white ranchu and the ones with the lemonheads pop up more often than the all white ranchu(with white heads)which are quite rare.... heres a one of the white guys (with a lemonhead and spots of tangerine ) that I currently have in the collection.....yet to have a completely pure white guy yet... OzShrimp
duckweed? Thats marvelous as i have some to get out of my shrimp tank i was just going to throw on the garden In regards to mosquito larvae and the like do you just feed the ones from pet shop or what? Dont really wanna feed ones qand give disease or cause them to get sick Edited July 22, 2012 by OzShrimp
goldenswimmers
see if you can get your own duckweed going regularly(they will polish this stuff off quick)like an outdoor tub etc and just take some whenever its all full and it will replace itself in no time..I also keep an outdoor tub for mosquito larve..which is looked after by the rainwater...as long as you scoop the guys out with a net and the water isnt rancid you should be fine....if you are worried..you can also put them in a little container...rinse with some tank water and then feed...there are also ways to propogate bloodworm but havent really tried this other than natures own...the bottom of outdoor tubs, ponds etc..
