Melly89
My Ramshorn snails keep dying and I am hoping someone might have some advice to keeping them alive! Giant holes keep form in their shells and then they become fishy food for my Sucker Fish! I dont want to add anymore into the tank (as I only have a little baby black one left) until I find out what is happening to them. Would it be my goldfish being nasty little buggers or would there be something weakening thier shells in the water? Pleast help!!!!
mthom211
If holes are forming then your water is to soft or acidic, they dissolve in water.
wickkyjr
Yeah probably to soft, they need calcium to keep there shells nice
tutters187
I find ramshorn snails prefer acidic water, alkaline water eats their shells and vice versa for mystery snails
goneself
Not enough calcium available..chuck a couple of washed sea shells or empty snail shells in with em. What else do you have in the tank? Maybe dont do that if there's anything that will be worried by a hardness spike.
pk333
I find ramshorn snails prefer acidic water, alkaline water eats their shells and vice versa for mystery snails Really tutters  My own experience is the opposite. My red ramshorn snails only reach the size of a 5 cent piece then their shells dissolve in my acidic water. I saw one close to a 10 cent piece in Fishchicks on the weekend and have spoken to Jodi-Lea in the past about mine perishing because of their shells disolving because of acidic water. tutters187
Really Briz That's what I've found or I wouldn't have said it
bidkev
Yes, they need alkaline water and calcium supplements. vacation feeder blocks will toughen their inner shell, whilst a piece of cuttlefish left in the tank will aid with the outer. Melly89
Ahh I have them with goldfish so I keep my water nuetral/alkaline so I shall chuck in some calcium and cuttlefish and hopefully they shall last a little longer! Thanks heaps for your help, I am truly grateful for your advice - I really quite like my Ramshorns!!
pk333
Really BrizThat's what I've found or I wouldn't have said it Sorry tutters I didn't mean to come across as questioning your experience. I was hopping the emotican sort of conveyed a puzzled "what the" type of expression.
