DavidTullee
Thought I'd start a single post that everyone can post their own recipes, links to other threads or web sites to create a one stop shop for home brews. If you post can you head your post up with the intended fish group the food mix is for (e.g. Cichlids, Natives, Discus, whatever). Also include all ingredients and preparation techniques. From what I have read, the method to hold it all together is critical (gelatine or agar) and how much of each you used, so post this as well. Here's a few links of some good threads I've come across. Add your own or links to build a good resource for anyone wanting to DIY. http://www.qldaf.com/forums/general-aquarium-discussion-19/i-made-my-own-fish-food-1st-time-55767/
goldenswimmers
This is not really a recipe but is a "diet" that you can use.Its used to get your fish in prime condition and ready for breeding/spawning. Although this is for Goldfish...I am sure you could adjust quantities to suit different fish...such as more of the shredded prawn etc.. Big thanks to Robert H Dangerfield too as its taken from his commercial goldfish breeding book... "My diet and feeding schedule for the fish in the couple of months leading up to spawning is: 6am - Well cooked oatmeal, an amount they will eat in just 5-10 minutes. I sometimes flavour this with Shrimp meal. 10am - Chopped cooked spinach or peas cooked to soft, again 5-10 minutes supply. 2pm - Garden Worms, I prefer African night crawlers as they can get to a large size for the bigger breeders. I feed these until the fish begin to refuse more worms. The worms will live underwater for a very considerable time and generally don’t present a pollution problem. I also feed live fairy or glass shrimp, again they don’t pollute if not eaten straight away. 6pm - a feed of cooked shredded prawns…again only enough for 5-10 minutes feeding. You’ll note that I stress the 5-10 minute supply rule. If the fish are overfed and leave uneaten food, it quickly spoils. This then poses a pollution problem and very real health hazard. Either the spoilt food will rot and cause deterioration of water quality, or a greedy fish may wolf it down and end up with internal problems. The oatmeal provides the carbohydrate; the spinach or peas the vegetable matter and the worms, shrimp and prawn, the protein. This feeding regime should condition your fish to peak condition, all other factors being O.K. such as water quality and freedom from pre-existing health problems." And yes I am pretty sure you could change the times(some might not like the 6am feeding regime )to suit.... DavidTullee
Discus Preparations I think this is the recipe of bigrocks you mentioned Harris http://www.qldaf.com/forums/general-aquarium-discussion-19/beefheart-recipe-49427/ Others Discus Forums :: View topic - Merrilyn's beef heart recipe. http://www.qldaf.com/forums/discus-30/what-do-you-feed-your-discus-58919/ Discus Fish Food Recipe http://www.discushatchery.com/food.html Seems like the crowd is split on beef heart and I tend agree with the camp that seem to be leaning away from using it. When I get my act together might try a hybred of some of these but substitute the beef heart with another source of protein like earthworms or fish flesh like mullet ( high omegas). Just out of interest here is a link to the ingredient list from Spectrum products. http://www.aquariumemporium.com.au/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=26&product_id=307 Edited August 30, 2012 by DavidTullee

kasman
I had a crack at some homemade food. Went with a very basic recipe first off. For my peacocks/haps - 50% whole green prawns (less heads but left shells on for roughage) 25% peas, 25% spinach For my mbuna - 20% prawns, 40% peas, 40% spinach Blender was slow going, so I recomend using a food processor which worked a treat. And as for the gelatine, go with extra. Fist time round it just wouldnt set enough based on box instructions so I had to mix more gelatine in. Even then it was still too soft to cut it neatly. But other than that its good stuff. So easy and cheap. I made about 1kg of food for about $10.
DavidTullee
OK so I had a bit of spare time over the last few days so decided to make up some homemade food for my fishies and took some pics so here goes. Ingredients 90% vegetable to 10% meat ratio • prawn meat deshelled • Spinach • Peas steamed for 2 mins in microwave • Pumpkin steamed for 2 mins in mocrowave • Zucchini • Garlic cloves • Spirulina powder • Paprika • Human multivitamin tablets • Human calcium tablets • agar Method Put one ingredient at a time in the food processor and chop till fine but not a paste. Once all ingredients are done I put it all back in the food processor and gave it a few more pulses to mix it all up well. Final product. Once everything was all mixed well I boiled some water to dissolve the agar and stirred this through the mix. You have to stir slowly or you will make air bubbles and the food will float. Once the agar was mixed in I place it into zip lock bags and pushed all the air out before the mix cooled and the agar set. Leave the bags sit flat on the bench for 10-15mins to cool and set then place in the freezer. I just snap a piece off and let it defrost and put it into the tank. The fish seem to love it. I also made the same mix and omitted the prawns so as I can feed my bristlenose veg every day and the prawn mix once or twice a week only. The discus get the prawn mix once a day. ronny
If you are wanting to make it easier to snap off.more controlled.amounts try placing a piece of egg crate in between each layer. This will give you a chocolate block pattern so you can easily snap of exactly how much you need.
