Otto
To be able to judge the fish properly you need to post a pic with the fish at full flare. From what I can see, you have some nice boys there. I like boy 2 myself, very interesting color. Both look like HM?? Before breeding, do lots of research and have a plan ready for food and jarring when required. I love breeding these guys as its really hands on. So much more than throwing two fish in a tank, feeding and waiting. They grow so fast as well that it's very hard to lose interest. Good luck. :-)
goldenswimmers
Otto...should I aim at females with as close a "matching colour" as possible...or do you create crazy colours/patterns from a mixed colour cross???....will do some research too so I dont annoy everyone with a million questions (just seems like a lot to it....bit daunting with the genetics side first up...and I thought goldies were bad )

Otto
Unless you know the history of line the fish came from (which rules out 99% LFS fish), you could get anything. If you are trying this for the first time, grab any female you like of same tail type and have a go. Once you are more confident you can worry about genetics and colors. It also comes down to taste. I love the Red Devils (black orchid with red wash) but as nice as these fish are, they are a not a desirable fish for showing. That first boy suffers from "red wash" which is a major fault in showing and is not something you would look to continue. Again, this is show grade only. Personally, I like both boys. A nice steel girl with no1 (no red wash in her though), and maybe a nice Yellow girl for no2. Good luck and keep is informed along the way. Will help you as much as I can. :-)
Otto
Or really go wild and find a girl carrying the marble gene. Then it truly is a guess. :-)
goldenswimmers
I have a "plakat" girl carrying the marble gene (picked up at last auction as part of a plakat pr..cambodian I think they said they were...like a pinky white)....would it be good/no good trying her with either of them???? Otto
Put her with either boy and see what happens. :-) Just remember that breeding short fin X long fin means you will get longfin fry. BUT, 50% of these will carry the short fin gene so short fin may result in further breeding. This is a common problem when people sell "long fin" Betta they have bred themselves and they don't recognise the male PK amongst the girls. :-).
