Daharkazangel
After putting a ad up for my baby oscar, its got me thinking due to some pms about what people think a good perm tank size is for a oscar. I personaly think a 4x2x2 for one and a 6x18x18 but pref 6x2x2 for two. Am im being unreasonable? Is a three foot say by 18 inch with other americans seriously ok for a oscar? I just feel a little deflated thinking about these wide and potentially long fish in tiny tanks...im hapoy to be corrected. Help!
DVS969
Id keep one in a 4x18x18. They say 200ltr minimum but Oscars are dirty as **** so need a little more water imo.
africanmad
i have 2 in a 4fter and they r quite happy...it all depends on their size really mine r large ...tar sue
kasman
yeh 4x18x18 min for one. after that personal choice i reckon. I have a 20cm in that size for now, unbeknown to the missus he will be upgraded to something bigger once he hits 30cm (more than likely a 6x18x18 )
__CAV__
I guess it depends on how the tank is setup, personally i wouldnt go any smaller than about 3hx2w, but that being said if you have good filtration and to a wc religously, you might be ok with an oscar by itself in a 3x18x18, i definetly wouldnt be putting anything else in with it though in a tank that size
Qwerty
I wouldn't be too worried about tank size its filtration that you need to worry, Hole in head is a major concern with oscars.
pk333
I like my fish to have lots of swimming room. So if I was to ever own an Oscar, "my" minimum tank size would be 8'x2'x2'. In saying that, my parents used to have a breeding pair in a 6'x2'x2' when I was a kid.
Yodapwnsasmurf
I'd probably go no smaller than a standard 4ft for 1 permanently.... And a 5ft for 2, but you know, I have kept them short term in 3ft tanks for short periods of time without any bad effects, besides general boredom. scott95
i would say a 4 x 2 x 2 would be most comfortable for life for an oscar. they are messy so the more water volume the better and the more swimming space they have to keep themselves about their merry days. i see on us forums somtimes a '55gal' is reccomended, that being 4 x 15 x 12 or somthing like that, which i do not endorse what so ever. ive seen huge oscars, id say 4 x 2 for life, a pair i would go a foot extra and say 5 x
pk333
This is the way I look at things. An Oscar can easily grow to 30cm, 1 foot or 12 inches. It's all the same. I like my fish to be in a tank at least 8 times their body length for them to have a bit of swimming room. Hence why I said 8 foot minimum, but the larger the better. I think forum member greenterra has one the best tanks I've seen (not in person) for large cichlids.
Daharkazangel
Well ive decided to keep my oscar and try and get another six foot asap ( tax and bonus coming, yew!) Sooooo anyone got a 6x2x2 for sale? I cant handle seeing large fish in small tanks, even more so in a crowded underfiltered tank. Hole in the head waiting to happen. Not one of my four oscars has any signs and i plan to, keep it that way.. Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it.
