My DIY White & Blue Led Lighting

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just finishing wiring up my led lights for 4ft African tank. Its been a work in progress for the last few months. I had it all hooked up & running fine but was getting alot of algae build up in tank, so pulled it apart and put switches and a dimmer on so I can control the amount & intensity of the light. Also added 2 x 12v computer fans - the leds get a bit warm, so wanted some air moving around, so added a fan at each end.

Basically I can have any combination of leds on at any time. Blues and Whites are both on their own circuits and I've got timers setup on both.

There is 3 x 20w white leds & 2 10w blue leds.

I got all parts from ebay and the original design came from another fish forum.

Here's a few pics of it all setup on my bench. Will mount it all on the tank tomorrow and post some more pics then.

Enjoy.

Cheers

Dan

Heres all the parts for blue & white leds,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pc-20Watt-W...ht_1770wt_1270

these are the white lights and heat sinks

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pc-10W-Blue...ht_3175wt_1270

blue lights for the moonlights

http://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Power-2...ht_1444wt_1037

convert ac power(power from the wall outlet in your house) to dc power which the led requires

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FREE-SHIP-10...ht_2957wt_1037

this is for the blue lights i run both of my blue lights off the same driver.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12V-24V-8...ht_2195wt_1037

this is the dimmer for the blue lights which i suggest you get so you can change the brightness of the moonlights and adjust what the daylights look like.

Cheers mate! Will be looking into this for my breeding set up

No worries mate.

Basically you need a driver for each of the white leds. But you only need 1 for the blues if you're going to run it off the dimmer - which i highly recommend you do, as the blues are very intense and without the dimmer you would end up with a huge algae outbreak. Also if you're going to put switches on like i have, you need to put them before the driver.

Hi Dan. Very interested to see the final result. I'm also curious as to how you've setup the computer fans. Have you set one to exhaust or are they both just blowing air around? Just if you have one to exhaust you will get the benefit of removing any excess heat. Otherwise you're just blowing hot around and making no difference.

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

Been a bit lazy this weekend and havent put it back on tank yet. Might get to it this arvo.

Yeah I have one fan blowing air in and the other out.

Looking into the parts and comments you made would you recommend using half the Watts per LED ie 10W white and 6W blue?

is the tank 18" high? And reading into the 20W white led says 160 degree... appears to be concentrated in a 90 -120 degree. have you added any reflectors?

cheers

Yeah you could do that. I only have the leds on while im at home in the arvo/night. So the algae growth has slowed.

No reflectors.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Feel free to use the design, I got it from another forum, just made a few changes to it so it was what i wanted.

Any chance you could post the wiring diagram? even if its just a hand drawn one I would appreciate it.

Great work, it looks awesome!
