63off
Fairly certain you can pick up ammonia at the supermarket, or maybe the hardware. Just be sure to get AquaOna Premium Aquarium Ammonia. Domestos just doesn't cut it.
Mitch.0
Thanks John, transferred my Seachem sensor thingy over from my africans to my L's tank. I was just worried about my little L's being in a smaller tank and found a dead cherry shrimp yesterday so panic set in. Alls good, reading are normal. When I first started keeping fish I started with Dwarf Gouramis, tetras etc and was replacing them weekly. I thought I just didnt know how to keep them alive and the LFS happily kept selling me more. Eventually a friend said to check my Ammonia levels which I did and it was as high as you could get, poor little things had burn marks on them but I thought it was from fighting. Point is, when you first start out you have absolutely no idea and you trust the LFS to inform you on general things and believe what they say. Its not until you get passionate about fish that you find out about wonderful sites like this and then learn so many things that you would otherwise never know. I feel sorry for the families that buy their kids their first fish which the kids become attached to, only to find it dead a few days later and after a few goes at it the give up the hobby all together as it all becomes too hard. Well thats my rant for the day !!!!
Kimall
I asked how long it might be untill the LFS had some Natives coming in and was told by the staff that they are not very popular and when they come in they sell real fast so to keep an eye out for them.I left confused if they sell fast arnt they popular. Cheers KIM
Munruben1
How many more people will get confused, first he wants a test kit then post turns to crap and he is told what to clean his bathroom with, so it is not only the checkout chick at the LFS who failed to attend lesson 101 on fish keeping. So now we can't have a little bit of fun on the forums? The OP was a rant, not a request for help and by nature a rant will always attract a mixture of responses. I don't believe anyone that has replied is confused about anything other than the quality of staff at some LFS. I've personally met some dud staff in pet shops, I've had crap service from aquariums that other members can't say enough good things about and I've had exceptional service from outlets that have never had a mention on this site, and I will continue to go back to the good ones. Bassius
I went to a pet store a few weeks back and when I was in their aquarium section I noticed a lot of dried dog poo under the tank racks....I thought that was pretty weird but someone will notice it and clean it up.... I went back to the same store a few days later and to my disgust there was fresh dog poo all over the aquarium section and it stank real bad....I pointed it out to the girl working there and also informed her of the dried dog poo under the racks( it was still there). I got no response from her and she gave me the cold shoulder and treated me like I was the problem.....I will never ever go there again!

There will always be bad experiences and that is the same with everything. In most cases you should have more good experiences than bad - a lot of good staff out there too. fish4fish3
bit off topic but sort of relevant... The best scam going at the LFS... They sell you sick fish and then when you return and abuse them about it they try and sell you every expensive medicine or some sort of conditioner for it. Then tell you to come back if there is still a problem... What for? to buy more meds? or more sick fish to buy more meds for? Just need salt and water changes... It's all good! I'm sad that your first point of action is to return to the shop to abuse the staff. It shouldn't be acceptable - why not go in with a water sample so that way you can prove its not your environment and work to a conclusion that makes everyone happy? Chances are the first staff member to ask you if need help had no clue you're about to rage on them.
gingerbeer
name and shame We are not a name and shame sort of forum. We like to direct to the good stores. Some of the good stores are listed at the top of every page. I have certainly been to some bad stores, including one in country NSW that had all there melanochromis named incorrectly, and pointed out the errors in the ID, worked through the ID's with there ID book with them, explained the colour changes with age refering to there referecnes, suggested some better references to use for ID, and was then told the manager knew better as they were a marine biologist. I asked if they did knew they were fresh water fish and cut my losses. In the same country town the owner bought a madascar lace plant, and I watched it slowly die, as they were not equiped to care of it. Eventually the owner came over to me during my weekly check and said, here's a bag, if you want it you can get it out the tank! He was my favorite store while I lived there.... There are good store and not as good stores out there.....
Bassius
Maybe we 'should' name and shame....the quality of stores is going downhill in a big way....if we name and shame then maybe they are held accountable and lift their game a little...it's quite simple really....be good to your customers and run a good lfs and you will get praise.....run a dodgy lfs and you will get named and shamed...... the lack of decent lfs is killing the hobby for me.....just my opinion. DeadFishFloating
Stores dont need to get named on forums for word of mouth to get around. People talk and talk and talk. Especially fish people!
raycam01_au
name and shame are like politics there is normally an agenda and 2 sides to every story, I have seen the good bad and the ugly, and have never had the need to run around and bad mouth a store, IMO
Mitch.0
I dont have any intension of naming and shaming but on the positive side I have had some extremely good experiences with LFS which I can name. Smiths are fantastic - great service and great quality, Ultimate Aquarium are also knowledgable and I also really like Furs n Fins. To me there is a huge difference between going to a LFS and buying a product off the shelf that you have used before and buying fish, I only buy fish from the ones I know are good. As for the sponsors of this site, unfortunately I havent been to their stores as a long way from Bribie but I know they would not be part of this forum unless they deserved it Yes, there are definately good ones out there and passionate staff that know what they are talking about. Its just a pity they are not all like that.
Braddo
funny thing is the shop attendant was kind of on the right track. Ammonia is more toxic in high ph tanks eg african and saltwater. Also you havent mentioned the ph in your l number tank. Seachem ammonia alerts are only made to work with a ph above 7. So if your tank is acidic it will give you a nil reading. Even the ammonia is more toxic in alkaline tanks this does not mean it is not in acidic tanks you just need the proper test kits to check them with. Ammonia will be presenin the acidic tank just not as toxic. It will still damage your fish. Hope this makes sense.
Bassius
I hear what your saying guys...but on the same hand...come and check out the lfs on Gold Coast...cause it's a different scene down here....I long for the old days when there were quality stores and knowledgeable staff...but like I said....just my opinion!
